Carousel was adapted from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway musical of the same name--which, in turn, was based on Liliom, a play by Ferenc Molnar. Gordon MacRae stars as carnival barker Billy Bigelow, who much against his will falls in love with Maine factory girl Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones). Billy proves an improvident and unreliable husband, but Julie stands by him. Upon discovering that Julie is pregnant, the unemployed Billy sees an opportunity for some quick money by joining his unsavory pal Jigger (Cameron Mitchell). The scheme goes awry, and Billy dies. Standing before the Pearly Gates, Billy is given a chance to redeem himself by the kindly Starkeeper (Gene Lockhart). He is allowed to return to Earth to try to brighten the life of his unhappy 15-year-old daughter Louise (Susan Luckey). Billy offers Louise a star that he has stolen from the sky; when Louise backs off in fear, Billy slaps her. He feels like a failure until he and his Heavenly Friend (William LeManessa) attend Louise's school graduation ceremony. There the invisible Billy watches as the principal (Gene Lockhart again) inspires Louise (and, by extension, Julie) by assuring her that so long as she has hope in her heart, she'll never walk alone. Frank Sinatra, the film's original Billy Bigelow, dropped out of the production due to laryngitis. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I had never actually seen the movie, though I grew up with the music. Apparently, the soundtrack was a number one seller while the movie itself didn't make it at the boxoffice. I really enjoyed putting the music to the story, and, with the exception of the "Can a hit feel like a kiss?" segment, I really liked it. Definitely 1950's, but then, so am I.

Not a great movie, but still enjoyable. Shirley Jones was fun to watch and so talented.

Personally, I like the movie "Carousel." The setting, background, choreography, and cinematography of this movie were just good. The acting performances delivered in this drama musical were good as well. What I really liked about this movie is the whole moral behind the plot and development of this movie that was really worthwhile and I wouldn't want to spoil it for any other viewer. Carousel is worth seeing though, but not one of the best musicals I have seen. Carousel is a little-above-average type of drama/romance type of musical.

Shirley Jones was a sweatheart in this movie!!.. she still amazingly looks good today ... Gordon McRae spectacular! NOT the greatest musical thou... 5 stars in my book are "An American in Paris", "Sound of Music" and "My Fair Lady" !!... this gets 3 1/2 stars

"Carousel" is Rogers and Hammerstein's only tragedy and is often revived not only by theaters but by opera companies as well. This film version was a follow-on to the highly successful "OKlahoma" released a year or so earlier and again teamed Gordon MacRae with Shirley Jones. By the time Carousel went before the cameras, MacRae's drinking problem was causing him to balloon upward in weight and he no longer was the heart throb of years earlier. Shirley Jones looked and sounded radiant. Agnes DeMille was not asked to do the choreography as the studio felt she was too demanding on the set with her dancers. Her work was copied from the stage version. Rogers and Hammerstein did not have as much control over this production as they did with "Oklahoma," and it shows. Nevertheless, their music and lyrics carry the show, as always.

I didn't like this one as much as Oklahoma and I guess I was disappointed because I expected the songs to be more enjoyable.

What a badly written story. I like musicals, but this story... a young lady (acting like a ditzy teen) maries a looser carousel worker after just meeting him... Even after knowing he got fired... He then can't find any other work (really?) and then he even strikes her and she put's up with it and just keeps on singing songs with lyrics that kids could write better... What a dissapointment. The song lyrics were so dumb too... Like "do you love me" When she just met the guy! What a poor excuse of a story just to hear some songs...
