Ernest Thompson, the playwright responsible for the Pulitzer Prize winning On Golden Pond, makes his directorial debut with 1969. Kiefer Sutherland plays a draft-age youth who undergoes an epiphany when one of his friends is killed in Vietnam. Sutherland's subsequent antiwar stance causes a great deal of tension within his own family, though his mother, Mariette Hartley, tries her best to understand. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

As the child of a hippie, I can fully "get" this film. Downey is brilliant as Raplh, the drug taking friend of Scott (Sutherland), I guess life CAN imitate art. Scott's overbearing father is played equally well by veteran actor Bruce Dern. And the girl who wants to save the world is played nicely by Ryder. However, the movie is truly fueled by Sutherlands performance. His portrayal of a borderline hippie comming of age is heart warming and endearing. I don't think there is another actor who could have done this role. The fims content is heavy and the acting is really good, but it is Sutherland performance that makes this fim so good. Not to mention a kick-ass soundtrack featuring bands like Cream, Canned Heat, CSNY, and of course, the king, Jimi Hendrix. I truly recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in a good tale about growing up hard. This is from IMDB but it is soooo good and what I think too.....

Decent movie take on the Vietnam era. Storyline is character driven and interesting. Ending is "hokey" and could have been better, but still an entertaining film.

Good film to get a feel of the times. I felt the ending was a bit anticlimactic. Robert Downey and Kiefer Sutherland both portrayed their characters well. Good movie to watch if you wish to reflect on America in 1969.

A look back to some of the social reactions to the Viet Nam war and how various factions attempted to reconcile their beliefs with the reality of an unpopular war.

This move is an accurate depiction of the conflicting attitudes in the sixties counterculture. Two high school graduates decide to bum around the US in a van during the summer. Conflicts with WW II era parents, the war in Viet Nan, drugs, the hippie culture and sense of purposelessness are all explored as the two try to find meaning in a world that doesn’t seem to make sense. For those of us who lived through the sixties, it is a reminder of the issues that we thought so important then. It doesn’t moralize although because it sees through the eyes of 18-year-olds, it takes the counterculture viewpoint. If you didn’t live through the sixties, you may not understand the conflicts. If you did, it will remind you of a time when issues that today seem so gray were starkly black and white. There is some full frontal female nudity; so don’t let the kids watch it.
