Member Rating:
Set in Australia in the 1930s, this drama stars Nicholas Gledhill as P.S., a six-year-old boy who lives with his Aunt Lila (Robyn Nevin) and Uncle George (Peter Whitford). P.S.'s mother died in childbirth, so her sister Lila took him in, and while George and Lila don't have a lot of money, they've always done the best they can to give the boy a good home. One day, Lila's other sister Vanessa (Wendy Hughes) arrives after spending several years touring the world; Vanessa is quite wealthy, and upon her return to Australia, she expresses an interest in taking custody of the child. Lila is willing to let Vanessa visit with P.S., and his rich aunt is able to turn his head with limousine rides and lavish gifts. But when Vanessa decides she wants the boy full time, Lila decides to fight her in court. The case is complicated by the arrival of P.S.'s long-absent father, Logan (John Hargreaves), an alcoholic who loves his son but is incapable of caring for him. Careful He Might Hear You won eight Australian Film Institute Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Hughes), and Best Supporting Actor (Hargreaves). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I enjoyed this movie. It won all kinds of Australian awards. If you like Australian period films with gorgeous clothes and sets, you'll enjoy this one. The little boy was a joy to watch and his Aunt Venessa won an award for her portrayal of the disturbed rich aunt.

Realistic and entertaining look at the emotional pitfalls experienced by a parentless boy being looked after by aunts. Nicholas Gledhill's performance as the 6 year old is impressive. First rate cinematography is a plus.

this movie was interesting while being a little strange because of the aunts eccentric behavior. The boy did a very good job in his part of being torn between two people who wanted possession of him

Regarding Laura T's review, I don't recall a molestation, but I agree it was a very poor movie. I kept hoping to find some redeeming quality and watched to the end. Unfortunately the ending was probably the worst part of the whole movie....don't waste your time

The story of a boy being fought over by two aunts is a good idea, but it wasn't done properly. This film rushes through the important bits, then ends at what seems like the middle of the story. It's quiet; you have to turn the volume way up in order to hear what's going on during the quiet bits, and then a loud scene will come along and you have to turn the volume down to prevent being deafened. Plus, the soundtrack was clearly written by someone who had never read the script: it's major, soaring theme makes light of all the important events in the film. I give it two stars only because the young lead actor was very professional.

A very good Australian period movie. Having been raised in New Zealand, back aways, I was intrigued by the double standard in a society determined to be classless. Nicholas Gledhill gave an outstanding performance as the six-year old boy. I can see why this performance won so many Australian rewards.

Not suggested for the hard of hearing!! A darling young actor, and good performances in an odd story, but the often over-powering background sound and Aussie accents combine to make it extremely difficult to always follow the dialogue!
