It's more Ginger Rogers than Fred Astaire, and more comedy than singing and dancing in this Astaire-Rogers entry into the screwball comedy sweepstakes which features a top-of-the-line Irving Berlin score (Change Partners, I Used to be Color Blind, The Night is Filled with Music). Fred Astaire plays Dr. Tony Flagg, a psychiatrist, who enters the psyche of Amanda Cooper (Ginger Rogers), a radio singer whom Tony's friend Stephen Arden (Ralph Bellamy) takes to see him. It seems Arden thinks that Amanda needs psychiatric help since she can't reach a decision regarding Stephen's proposal of marriage to her. As Tony explores her subconscious dream life, she falls in love with him. Tony feels that her love is temporary -- merely a sign of transference. To channel her love in the right direction, Tony hypnotizes her to believe that she is in love with Stephen. But then things become more complicated when Tony comes to realize that he, in fact, is in love with Amanda himself. He now has to figure out a way to bring her out of her hypnosis and get her back to normal so that they can both fall into the clinch. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

This movie is a hoot. Lots of subtext and innuendo for those who think 1930's pictures are watered down. Anyway, the thing I found most amusing about this film was that it is legitimately funny. Ginger Rogers' comic timing during her hypnotized-mayhem scene is absolute perfection. And even seeing her get cracked in the face is charming! Check out Ralph Bellamy before he became one of the evil dudes in Trading Spaces!

This is a great movie. Ginger Rogers does such a good job playing a indecisive nut case, that for a while you start to believe maybe she is a little crazy. Full of dancing and comedy this is definitely a great family movie.

If you love Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and a delightful, charming story, don't miss Carefree. Ginger Rogers is hysterical! It is also nice to see Ginger chasing Fred for a change. Our family loved this one.

My son loves these "old-time, dancing" movies. They have a great story, there is no foul language, and I feel good sharing them with him. They are usually first-time views for both of us, and we enjoy seeing them together. I am so grateful that we still have these movies to enjoy.

It's great fun to see how hip 1938 was. It doesn't look dated at all. Ginger is a scream. Fred's shrink would have been arrested for malpractice in today's world ; ) The fashions are divine, and the dancing -- especially Ginger's dream dance -- is superb.

I saw this movie when it was brand new and I still love it just as much as then. It has one of the most beautiful songs, "Change Partners" and I still remember all the words. The plot is so different from the many movies they made together over the years with Fred as a psychiatrist and Ginger engaged to the wrong man. And, it is funny too.
