Academy-award winning director Tom Hooper's adaptation of the beloved musical Les Miserables makes no major changes to the original's plot. The story follows former prisoner Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), who, after being released from the watchful eye of police officer Javert (Russell Crowe), is unable to find work because of his status as an ex-convict. He eventually steals from a local church, but when apprehended, the priest claims that Valjean was given the valuables. This triggers a change in Valjean, and he constructs a new identity for himself as a pillar of society and a local businessman. Years later, he adopts a young girl named Cosette, whose mother Fantine (Anne Hathaway), a former employee of his, became a prostitute and died a horrible death in the gutters after being fired. As the years progress and the French Revolution begins to foment, a grown Cosette (Amanda Seyfried) falls for a passionate revolutionary named Marius (Eddie Redmayne), while Javert begins to close in again on Valjean's secret past. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

How many times can they make this movie? Many, but this version was top of the line in story line, costumes, acting, and scenery. Singing...not so much. Still very entertaining for a musical.

Very well done movie, but very sad. Worth watching once anyway.

I have to say not a bad movie. Anne Hathaway steals the show. Her character was so heartbreaking to watch. I would have like this movie even more if there hadn't been so much singing. I knew it was a musical, but I didn't realize that it was one of those where they sing conversations. It was hard to understand the words sometimes because they would be "talking" at the same time

I am not a big fan of musicals, but I liked this a lot.

The film is spectacular, but to say it could lead to musicals making a comeback, Hooper needed to remember the good ones did include speaking lines. The lack of dialogue in this film did leave holes in the story. Had I not read the book or seen prior adaptations, I would have been lost. A huge chunk of the story was missing. Otherwise, all the actors sang beautifully per their roles, and I loved this film. I miss the occasional "good" musical films, the Rodgers and Hammerstein type ones. This film ranked with those. I'm purchasing the BlueRay.

Excellent movie, this movie draws you into each and every song that is sung. Beginning with Jackman, immense emotion and raw nerve, I just can imagine what the character went through, but he brings it out in this part. Anne Hathaway was magnificent and so much feeling, excellent. Costume and design were excellent too. Overall a great musical....

Fine adaptation of the Broadway play, but sometimes certain works belong only on the stage. This is a good example of one of them. Everything seems too heightened by the camera for the audience to get really involved. Works on the stage as opera, and opera should not be filmed. Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway are fine, but the definitive performances of these roles and the music will always be Colm Wilkinson and Patti LuPone.

It's a rare musical that can grip me so intensely as this one managed to do. I believe that the cinematographic groundbreaking technique of live performances during each scene not to mention a phenomenally talented cast set this film ever so slightly apart from the other nominees. I experience every emotion of the human spectrum -- anger, tears, frustration, laughter -- very intensely in almost every moment of the 159 minutes. Exhausting at the end, but in a profound and lasting way. I wanted to applaud as each actor poured out their souls into each take -- well, one has to see it, preferably in the theater I believe to feel the full impact of this amazing feat in cinema.

One of the truly transcendent plays of our time does not disappoint in this magnificent screen adaptation. Some scenes are simply stunning to behold, with pure, raw emotion. Anne Hathway's soliloquy is breathtaking, and she will surely clean-up in award season. Each cast member brings their own personal touch to what are some of the most famous characters in literary fiction. Not all performances are flawless, much like the characters they emulate, but it works to bring a very emotional and powerful experience to those who love the book and the play. Enjoy!

Everything from the makeup to costuming and acting was amazing. I hadn't realized going into the movie that the entire movie was sung and at first that threw me but within 15 minutes you forgot that and it really drew you into the movie. Some have beautiful voices, some average voices, but this also is fitting for the parts that the actors play. You can't help routing for the underdogs in the French Revolution and Jean Valjean. The movie climaxes and you just want to jump up and sing their fight song with them. The movie is well done and a must see. Definitely and academy winner!

Was slow developing and at three hours could stand some editing. Over all a good moie experience but consider Chicago a superior film musical By the way; Allan R, do you have any grasp of what makes for drama or story telling?
