A small group of British retirees learn that the life they want to live might not be the life they need to live after pooling their resources to spend their twilight years in a unique setting located in India. Upon arriving at the once-opulent Marigold Hotel, however, the eager pensioners come to realize that rumors of the building's restoration have been greatly exaggerated. But just when it starts to seem that the privileged seniors have been swindled out of their life savings, they summon the courage to sever their ties to the past, and embrace their new life with a sense of wonder and adventure. Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, and Dev Patel star in this uplifting comedy-drama from director John Madden (The Debt, Shakespeare in Love). ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
So refreshing, colorful, and hopeful. The cast is genius, and India and the hotel were also characters. The building they used as the hotel has great architectural "bones," and though I've never been to India, I feel I got a taste of the country from this movie. I'm thinking about buying it for my collection. A delight to watch. We watched it twice before returning it.
Very pleasant movie. Easy to follow with subtitles, as both English and Indian accents are hard for me to decipher. Maggie Smith is such a good actress, and all the cast seemed to be at their best. Movies set in India usually depress me. This was uplifting.
Wonderful film; great story, great actors, beautiful settings, gorgeous scenery. If you are old, you can relate to the story. If you think you ever might be old, you can relate to the story. Actually, if you can THINK, you can relate to this beautiful film. It's worth it.......and as I've done with other great films, I'll see it again in a year or two. Yes, it's that good.
I was dubious at first - the thought of a movie about old people in retirement at that! But this was a very enjoyable watch, with a great cast and characters. I found it very moving - no murder, no mayhem, no gimmicks, just a good story and good acting.

As far as I am concerned, this was a perfect movie. Good characters played by a first rate British cast and a well thought out plot line that ends satisfactorily. This probably appeals to the older generation, but anyone who appreciates quality in their entertainment will enjoy this. And it's got that cutie patootie from Slumdog Millionaire, Dev Patel, for humor and youthful exuberance.
