Producer/director Roger Michell teams with screenwriter Richard Nelson to adapt Nelson's BBC radio play chronicling the extramarital affair between President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Bill Murray) and his distant cousin, Daisy (Laura Linney), which comes to light during a royal visit from the King and Queen of England (Samuel West and Olivia Colman) at his home in Hyde Park. As war engulfs Europe and the king seeks the support of the American government, President Roosevelt struggles to balance his domestic affairs with his international obligations as Commander in Chief. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Good movie and well acted for me, all around. I don't always like Murray's work but thought he did a very good job portraying FDR.
Interesting previous comments and critics sort of panned it - I expected not too much then and was pleasantly surprised.
Sexual situations?? Where? When Daisy rubbed his leg? Ha!
Even though I am a student of history and usually enjoy this type of movie, this movie was BORING and irrelevant. I enjoyed the dynamic between Roosevelt and the Royal Couple and the insights into his marriage, but the affair, which is at the center of the movie, was tedious. Murray was also disappointing as Roosevelt and did not capture the great man's magnetism.
This movie had a lot of potential, but it was a mistake to tell the story through the eyes of Daisy. In spite of her fling with FDR, she was "duller than dishwater," as the saying goes. Their relationship never became compelling. I was sorry for Laura Linney, a great actress, who was saddled with such a boring character. On the other hand, I'd like to see more of Olivia Williams as Eleanor in another Roosevelt film. She was mostly in the background of this story, but played FDR's spouse to the hilt.
