Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone adapts author Don Winslow's best-selling novel into this all-star ensemble crime drama about a pair of peaceful, Laguna Beach marijuana dealers who are targeted for extortion by the ruthless Mexican Baja cartel. Ben (Aaron Johnson) is a devout Buddhist and dedicated philanthropist, and his best friend Chon (Taylor Kitsch) is a former mercenary who trained as a Navy SEAL. They may not seem like major drug dealers, but together they make a comfortable living selling top-quality marijuana. And they share more than just a profitable business; their mutual girlfriend O (Blake Lively) is more than enough woman for the two ambitious young entrepreneurs to handle. But just as Ben and Chun are feeling like they're on top of the world, their blissful life of lawless hedonism threatens to yield dire repercussions. The Mexican Baja cartel wants a piece of the action, and their cruel leader Elena (Salma Hayek) has dispatched her top hatchet man Lado (Benicio Del Toro) to ensure that she gets it. When the cartel kidnaps Ophelia and threatens to kill her unless Ben and Chun comply, the desperate pot dealers enlist the aid of a shady DEA agent (John Travolta) to try and avert a tragedy. Emile Hirsch and Uma Thurman also star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Oliver Stone returns to his roots where he made tough-as-nails dramas that gave us a different perspective on life we enjoy breathing into. Here, he explores how brutal and sadistic Mexican drug cartels are and what you see you will believe. It is a "Natural Born Killer" of a film.
I wanted to like this movie a lot more than I ended up actually enjoying it. Blake Lively is the best part of the movie. No matter who is on screen, you are just drawn to her. Even when she looks like tired after being kidnapped she still looks amazing, Salma Hayek has a great character to chew on too. The movie just seemed to drag an awful lot. Shot very vividly, different than a usual Oliver Stone movie. I wish this movie had lived up to its potential.
*Not related to movie ; I too can not read the other reviews from BB site . This has been going on for weeks . As others have stated , FIX the web page BB! Also get rid of all the spam on here , dont you even check your own website ???
I think the trailer for this movie and the cast raised my expectations so much that the actual movie became somewhat of a let-down. I never read the book, but I can see how this story would work so much better as a book rather than a movie. It's hard to identify with any characters which makes it hard to care for any of them. This movie strives for realism, but I think it's very far from it. Oliver Stone hasn't had an Oscar worthy movie for over a decade. I think he lost his relevance.
Great movie. Just saw it last night. Keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. A great cast was choosen for this I cant think of anyone better for any role. Beauiful scenery of Laguna Beach but didnt show much of Mexico. I read the book and this does great job of staying true to the book, the things changed where nessicary to adapt it to the big screen. If you enjoy a intense thrill ride kind of movie rent it.

Some should find this one entertaining... An interesting movie from Oliver Stone based on a novel about dealers who are not looking for trouble but indeed find it. It is very intense and violent at times. Fairly good and a little different paced than most dramas as it is told in third person. Lots of pretty ocean scenery , (several nude scenes for those that object), but decent performances from familiar actors as well. 3 D would have been great I am sure...
