Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone adapts author Don Winslow's best-selling novel into this all-star ensemble crime drama about a pair of peaceful, Laguna Beach marijuana dealers who are targeted for extortion by the ruthless Mexican Baja cartel. Ben (Aaron Johnson) is a devout Buddhist and dedicated philanthropist, and his best friend Chon (Taylor Kitsch) is a former mercenary who trained as a Navy SEAL. They may not seem like major drug dealers, but together they make a comfortable living selling top-quality marijuana. And they share more than just a profitable business; their mutual girlfriend O (Blake Lively) is more than enough woman for the two ambitious young entrepreneurs to handle. But just as Ben and Chun are feeling like they're on top of the world, their blissful life of lawless hedonism threatens to yield dire repercussions. The Mexican Baja cartel wants a piece of the action, and their cruel leader Elena (Salma Hayek) has dispatched her top hatchet man Lado (Benicio Del Toro) to ensure that she gets it. When the cartel kidnaps Ophelia and threatens to kill her unless Ben and Chun comply, the desperate pot dealers enlist the aid of a shady DEA agent (John Travolta) to try and avert a tragedy. Emile Hirsch and Uma Thurman also star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Worth watching once. I think the movie suffers by using well known stars such as Travolta, Hayek and Del Torro. They come off as caricatures and the movie looses its grittiness. Check out Miss Bala for comparison.
Oliver Stone's adaptation of a violent novel. A young woman walking on the beach has dark foreboding that her life might end sooner than later. âBecause all is out controlâ. Chon, Taylor Kitsch, a mercenary killer and Ben, Aaron Johnson, a Buddhist, share O, Blake Lively. They receive an âinvitationâ from the Mexican Drug Cartel where âOâ is kidnapped. The Cartel's boss, Elena, Salma Hayek, threatens to kill her. Ben & Chon devise a trap for Elena to meet on Indian Land; enlist corrupt DEA agent, Dennis, John Travolta, for the reward. He heads the raid corralling the Mex's Drug Cartel. On TV he is Man of the Hour and establishes his own Cartel North. After a few weeks in the slammer, they disappeared presumably to pick up with âOâ somewhere. Suggest listening to âOâ opening lines. They contain the theme of the movie. Oliver Stone movies require serious in-depth analysis; this is one of them. Not for young impressive minds.
Without a doubt, the least engaging Oliver Stone film I'd ever seen. Blake Lively is a particularly pitiful actress (along the lines of Kristen Stewart) but the other two main characters were horrible as well. At no time during the movie was I engaged in the plot! There were WAY too many detours and twists and turns to even make it believable. Salma Hayek's not a great actress either and this was the poorest role I'd seen Benicio del Toro in, without a doubt. If you want a great movie of this type see "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang". Tremendously better acting and script. If you simply want to laugh at the circumstances and want to watch needless bloodshed, "Crank" is much better also.

Great movie. Just saw it last night. Keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. A great cast was choosen for this I cant think of anyone better for any role. Beauiful scenery of Laguna Beach but didnt show much of Mexico. I read the book and this does great job of staying true to the book, the things changed where nessicary to adapt it to the big screen. If you enjoy a intense thrill ride kind of movie rent it.
Some should find this one entertaining... An interesting movie from Oliver Stone based on a novel about dealers who are not looking for trouble but indeed find it. It is very intense and violent at times. Fairly good and a little different paced than most dramas as it is told in third person. Lots of pretty ocean scenery , (several nude scenes for those that object), but decent performances from familiar actors as well. 3 D would have been great I am sure...
