A widowed lawyer travels to a secluded village on an important assignment, and encounters a vengeful ghost with mysterious motives. After losing his beloved wife in childbirth, young barrister Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) was nearly consumed by grief. A haunted widower father, he raises his young son with the help of his devoted nanny. Arthur is on the verge of losing his job when an important client of the firm dies, and his boss offers him one last opportunity to prove his worth by settling the woman's affairs. Determined to succeed, Arthur travels to the remote village and receives a chilly welcome. Something horrible once happened here, and it seems that the locals are determined to ensure Arthur never finds out what it was. Now, the more time Arthur spends in his client's crumbling estate, the more aware he becomes of a presence that isn't quite human. In this house dwells a woman's ghost. In life she lost something precious, and now in death she'll do whatever it takes to get it back. Until she does, her spectral presence will serve as a harbinger of doom, always to be followed by the death of an innocent. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

REALLY SCARY. A true old-fashioned horror movie. The British stiff-upper-lip plays perfectly against a background of very scary scenes. Daniel Radcliffe is a versatile actor. A bit of a hokey ending...but we are talking the last few seconds.

This was an awesome movie that we intend to go out and buy this week end! It keeps you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out what in the world is going on in that town and what is everyone trying to hide! There was not one place that we found slow and wanted to fast forward through. I can't imagine why it had some of the bad reviews unless it was those simply looking for the usual gore and nudity of modern horror/suspense films! This was clean and extremely good. It does have scary scenes that I would not recommend youngsters watching. My 19 year old and husband are horror fans and knew this was tame enough for me to enjoy too (I am not a blood and guts type person). Awesome movie. Want to really creep yourself out? Watch it on a dark stormy night! A must for our Halloween collection!

The quality of acting, particularly by Radcliff, was excellent. Scary movies never scare me, but I did find this to be enjoyable. I'm definitely not interested in slash and gore movies, I much rather prefer movies with plot and suspense that build up to fright scenes rather than on blood and gore. It was fun to watch and hear the reactions from the theater audience. Worth the watch.

genuinely spooky, relying on suspense rather than gore, this is a good scary movie.

The same dark gothic nonsense that we have all seen way too many times. You know the routine: ghostly appartions, creaking noises in the house, dolls with sardonic faces and prolonged camera closeups on an angle, rocking chairs that begin to rock, wind up toys that activate, all out of nowhere .However, this one is especially boring.Do yourself a favor and skip it.

I am not a fan of " Harry", but this movie was very good. The acting by " Harry" was crisp, and I also like Ciarin Hinds ( who played Caesar in the Rome HBO series ). Good spooky story also. Well worth seeing.

Some good 'startles' throughout but an unsatisfying ending. As they say, "Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned" . . . they got that right!

genuinely nerve tingling, scary and effective ghost story. this movie would be particularly spooky all alone at night. that's the true test of how brave you actually are. it's always easier to watch a spooky movie with someone else and with the lights on. i watched this alone during the day and i still got the creeps. the scene where Daniel Radcliffe exhumes the dead kid's body from the muddy bog was really pushing the line of morbidity. i'm not a 'Harry Potter' fan, but i thought Radcliffe was pretty good in this. he reminded me of the old 'Hammer' horror movie actors like Peter Cushing from 'Hammer' horror flicks that i grew up with. this movie was predictable ghost story stuff, but it was effective and definitely scary. a good time for "ghost story" fans.

Mediocre movie. Daniel Radcliffe is a great actor and should be allowed to stretch a bit after Harry Potter but this movie just puts him right back in the same role. The movie was predictable and cliche.

It's nearly entirely composed of jump scares. What is even worse is the fact that they are predictable jump scares. They try to build up the ghost as a sympathetic character and fail miserably by the end. The mansion is something I'm sure anyone who has ever seen a ghost related movie has seen before. If you're looking for a thriller, move on to something else. If you're just getting into horror movies, this may be a tame one to start with.

If you like British suspense movies: you'll be disappointed with this one. The plot was unclear, the story choppy.

Over and under acted, not scary, and in sum a waste of time.
