Astronauts Charles Brubaker, John Walker, and Peter Willis (James Brolin, O.J. Simpson, and Sam Waterston, respectively) are hailed as heroes when they become the first men to be rocketed to Mars. Actually the space travelers are as phony as their mission controller, Dr. James Kelloway (Hal Holbrook); to avert a failure that might cost the space program its funding, the Mars-bound vessel has been sent up without a crew, while the helmeted astronauts sit on a movie soundstage, pretending to be in outer space for the benefit of the TV cameras. Unfortunately the Mars ship crashes on arrival, making the astronaut trio thoroughly expendable. Investigative reporter Robert Caulfield (Elliott Gould), who's smelled a rat all along, races against time to prevent NASA from "terminating" the hapless astronauts in order to cover up the conspiracy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie has an interesting plot that film makers didn't take full advantage of. Other than the lame ending it's not a bad movie to pass time with. It does scream for a remake though.

I just love this movie. I know it's an oldie but still a classic as far as I'm concerned.

I really like this movie as it had a good plot about NASA faking a landing on Mars. It makes me think whether really went to the Moon or not. Elliot Gould did a great job in performance as Robert Caulfield, the investigative reporter. It was very entertaining movie!

I remember when I first saw this movie at the Mann's Village Westwood when i was 18yrs old and I love it. Went to see it the second time and I payed attention to the music of Mr. Jerry Goldsmith (1929-2004) one of my favorite movie composer. His music carried this chessy conspiracy political thriller to a nail biter popcorn movie back a the summer of 1978. I became a big fan of his work when my mother took me the see "The Omen" and bought the original music soundtrack at Aaron's record on Melrose for the new release sale price @ $3.79 I love Karen Black and Elliot Gould as well as a James Brolin, O.J Simpson and the fresh face of Sam Waterston.

This is one of several US government conspiracy movies that came out during the 1970's; along with "Three Days of the Condor", "The Conversation", and "The Parallax View" it shows what Americans felt about their government and were willing to believe about it. The acting in this movie is fine; however, one will have to suspend their disbelief to accept the fact that the government would kill three of its own astronauts to cover up a fraud. This film is recommended for those who like movies of this genre and period.

Capricorn One is a great movie for about 40 minutes. It plays on the whole Pseudo-conspiracy theories of the real life Lunar Landing. You have an all-star cast and great acting. It really seemed to be on it's way to an all-time classic film. Then it all falls apart. The story gets sloppy and unfocused. The cover-up takes way too much time and involves too many people for an actual cover-up to stay a secret. Instead of a small rogue group the entire government is demonized with their actions. The story of the astronauts becomes barely good enough for a low budget made for TV movie. And that ending, stupid stupid stupid. We don't even know what happens to poor OJ or Sam. Very disappointing.

Capricorn One, about a faked landing on Mars, seemend to have some base in the 70's disaster films, although it did have better acting and a more believable plot. While there were some cheesy 70's special effects, the camera was the best part of it, especially when it tries to show the images first from someone who doesn't know that it's all a hoax, and then when it pans back to show us that the camera's lying to us. Not "Citizen Kane", but not "The Thing With Two Heads" either. Great for conspiracy buffs and fans of the space program. I would have liked to have seen more of the astronauts, though, espicially O.J. Simpson.

OJ gets about a 5 lines in the movies. He was better in "towering inferno" Elliot Gould is terrific as a conspiracy nut reporter, the car chase in which he drives off a bridge is unintetnionally hilarious. Karen Black and Brenda Vaccaro are wasted in throw-away roles. The plot has no details, who are the "bad guys" ? the president? aerospace people ? its so vague. the dialogue is real bad. Holbrooks motivation is stupid, we are supposed to believe he 's going to kill his astronauts to save his program?
