Cape Fear (1962)
Member Rating:
After an eight-year prison term for rape and assault, Max Cady (Robert Mitchum) is set free. Immediately making a beeline to Sam Bowden (Gregory Peck), the former prosecutor responsible for Cady's conviction, Cady laconically informs Sam that he intends to "pay back" the attorney for his years behind bars. Conducting a meticulous campaign of terror, Cady is careful to stay within the law. Sam, realizing that Cady intends to wreak vengeance by raping the attorney's wife (Polly Bergen) and daughter (Lori Martin), tries to put the ex-criminal behind bars, but has no grounds to do so. Chief Dutton (Martin Balsam) tries to help Sam with a few strong-arm tactics, but succeeds only in having the courts take Cady's side in the matter. Things come to a head when Sam moves his family to the "safety" of a remote houseboat on Cape Fear river. Cady shows up unannounced and is about to ravage Bowden's wife and daughter and when Sam turns the tables. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Mitchum is one of the greatest actors ever and is good at being good and even better at being bad. The movie is in black & white which makes it even better. A must see.

This, the original "Cape Fear" is so much more omnimous and realistic than the remake with DeNiro. I love DeNiro....but he has NOTHING on Robert Mitchum.....Mitchum really embodies sinister evil in this film!

Robert Mitchum is terrific playing the villain in this original film. The suspense is far superior to the remake.

I enjoyed this movie, but had seen the remake a few times already. The original was very suspenseful and well made, and the acting was great. However, in my opinion the remake was much better because it seemed even more suspenseful and action packed - probably due to the violent scenes and language, which make the events in the movie a lot more believable. I especially liked the ending in the remake, which was better than what happens in the original. Bottom line, I would tune into the remake over and over again if it was on TV, but if it was the original that was showing, I would probably find something else to watch.
