Glenn Close co-wrote and stars in this period drama based on the short story The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs by author George Moore, centering on the experiences of a 19th century Irish woman who poses as a man in order to work as a butler at an opulent Dublin hotel for the upper class. Maintaining her elaborate ruse over the course of two decades, Albert (Close) suddenly finds her dedication to the role challenged by the unexpected arrival of a painter who turns out to understand Albert better than anyone she could have imagined. Meanwhile, Albert finds her attempts to help pretty hotel maid Helen (Mia Wasikowska) thwarted when Helen becomes enamored with a charming but callous handyman (Aaron Johnson). Albert Nobbs played at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Heartfelt thanks to Glenn Close and her team for creating such a profound and thoughtful film. The characters of Albert, Hubert, Helen and Eileen stick in my mind. I have always loved Irish short stories, and I'd like to read more of author George Moore's work. This is truly a timeless tale, one well worth adapting into a screenplay.

I loved this adorable movie, I agree with the other reviewer, dealt with a very mature subject in an understated and beautiful manner. I would reccomend this movie to anyone who enjoys good old fashioned love and life stories, with a twist.

What can I say except well done. Glen Close did a convincing job of portraying a very ridge and proper servant of that time. The story was authentic without uncomfortable Gay love making scenes. Focus was on the characters and how they fit into this drama.

Well, I LOVE this film. Unfortunately, it is not one I would recommend to many people. You have to like the "Masterpiece Theatre" genre and be able to relate to the rigid class system of Ireland and England back in the 1800s. Glenn Close was enthralling; stellar, in fact. The entire cast was excellent. Whole production top quality. Story had me on the edge of my seat. I was angst-ridden from the get-go; you just knew this couldn't end well. I so wanted everyone to be happy. Kind of a surprise ending, however. Great, great entertainment.
