Bernard Rose followed his moody fantasy-thriller Paperhouse (1988) with this modern horror tale, based on Clive Barker's short story "The Forbidden". Compiling a thesis on urban legends, University of Illinois in Chicago graduate student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) becomes aware of the prevalent superstition surrounding the legend of "Candyman" (Tony Todd)--a hook-wielding phantom who will appear if his name is recited five times into a mirror--among the tenants of Chicago's Cabrini Green project. A senior professor, hearing of Helen's research, explains the historical basis for the legend, detailing how Candyman is believed to be the vengeful spirit of a former slave who, though initially respected in academia, was set upon and mutilated by an angry mob when accused of taking a white mistress. When the clinically-detached Helen flaunts her intellectual confidence by reciting Candyman's name five times, she sets in motion an inevitable series of supernatural events -- culminating in a series of grisly killings, after which Helen is invariably found holding the bloody murder weapon. Though she is captured by the police, it becomes evident to Helen that Candyman is guiding her fate every step of the way. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Blood: 3 Cheese Factor: 5 Acting: 2 1/2 Overall: 4 Ok so what I really liked about this movie was that at certain parts it actually scares you, and not jumpy scary I mean where you actually feel it in your chest. Even with all the scary movies I've seen this one still gives you that little fealing of fear deep inside you. Dont get me wrong this movie definetly had its cheesy and laughable parts but it can creep you out at the same time and lets face it thats what makes a good scary movie. THIS IS NOT ONE TO BE MISSED!

Back in 1992 this movie made me afraid to look in a mirror at night, and made me freak out even more if i was in there when the power went out. I think the acting is well done for the time, and the actor who plays candy man, well if i ever met him face to face, i would run away while having my terrets flair up. Definately a great movie to watch in the dark even if it is 15 years old. Just remember.....when your looking in the mirror.....say his name 3 times and he will come with his hook....candy man.....candy man.........candy...cane....ya right....im not dumb! Enjoy

I don't know that everyone is talking about when they say this movie is "cheesy" and the acting is bad. It is WAY less cheesy than most horror movies made today! It's not just another slasher movie there is actually a plot and it is definitely scary!

Candyman has a nice creepy atmosphere, and some good gore taboot. There's a mild level of cheese, but that's to be expected. Good story and worth the rent for you horror buffs.

This movie is worth it for the "fear factor" you get from the movie. Kids were scared out of their minds like I was when i was a kid. Not bad for an old movie when there's so much better graphics and such now. Definetely worth a rent :)

Wow. Really cheesy 90s film. Nothing really went on. Suspenseful at times but the ending sucks. I wouldn't rent if you are looking to watch a scary movie.

One of my favorites in horror. After you watch this, you'll be chanting, "IT WAS ALWAYS YOU HELEN!" Tony Todd's rich African voice is haunting and the story line creepy and classic. It is a gem in horror. A definite must!!!

After Virgina Madsen played in this movie, she probably figured her career was over. This movie is just plain awful. A story that makes no sense and poor acting at best. And every other scene, Madsen is smoking a cigarette...wonder how much Phillip Morris paid the producers.
