Lech Majewski directed this visually striking examination of the nexus between art and politics in the 16th century. In 1564, the Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel created one of his best-known and most controversial works, "The Procession to Calvary," in which Christ, carrying his cross, makes his way to his own crucifixion though a crowded landscape that features representations of hundreds of historic and contemporary figures. The painting was a biting commentary on political matters of the day as well as a satiric view of religion, and in The Mill & the Cross, Majewski re-creates the making of Bruegel's masterpiece, as the artist (played by Rutger Hauer) stages the images and explains their meanings while we learn more about the individuals depicted and the people who posed for the work, many of whom have their own stories to tell. Using digital imaging technology, The Mill & the Cross allows viewers to enter into Bruegel's painting as the static figures come to life. Also starring Charlotte Rampling and Michael York, The Mill & the Cross received its American premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Art lovers, history buffs, and those who appreciate offbeat movies should see this film! Most original, it's based on a single painting and offers an opportunity to "climb inside it" and meet some of the characters who populate it. Tying everything together is Rutger Hauer, as the artist Pieter Bruegel. His New Testament painting is set in late-1500s Europe. Not suitable for children's viewing because of some violent scenes.

Visually stunning on BluRay. It is a good imagined story of a story in a painting. This is not an exciting movie, you must be totally immersed in the film to get anything out of it. Send the children to bed! Some historical Christian content.

Beautifully composed, more art than movie, the entire film is painting in motion. The audience is invited inside the artist Pieter Bruegel's painting to experience the reality that prompted it.

Interesting concept making a movie centered around a painting.. Visually beautiful as well. Not a movie for everyone tho...No dialogue (plenty of sounds), but a history lesson nonetheless.

This film is for the well educated who are literate about history and art...esp. European. Many forget just how abusive and domineering the Spanish Catholic church was in tghe Middle Ages and how far reaching their influence was. A great history lesson since much of lt his is now omitted/distorted. from high school texts. Not for children under14 I'd say. Spares nothing in realism. And, is worth the time. What it lacks in dialogue it makes up for in it's graphic scenes and facial expression.

A unique, artsy type movie that bring Bruegel's paintings to life. Not a strong plot and no dialog--definitely helps if you have a background in art history and western civ to even understand it! My kids hated it--totally boring for them.

Artistically beautifu, but if this was to portray current political/religious struggles it did a very poor job of connecting the dots for the viewer. And the historical figures in the painting were poorly identified (expect for Christ).
