This is an awful movie. The sets were much too dark at times and the acting was weak and bouncing around all over the place. It was a complete waste of time of Edgar Allen Poes stories. I would not recommend this movie. Was this review helpful? Yes

This movie was too implausible and superficial for me to sit through. For one thing, they should have casted a better actor for the Edgar Allan Poe role. I didn't think John Cusack was right for it. Another, they should have told a better story about Poe than this one. Was this review helpful? Yes

The only thing that resembles Poe in this film is his name. An attractive looking production with good direction and editing but the story was contrived and downright ridiculous! If the story were more supernatural in the idea of what inspired Poe and how that inspiration drove him to such a sad end of his life -- as he dealt with the untimely death of his beloved young wife. As the film plays out frankly, it might as well have been any central character in the lead role not Poe. For Poe was a dignified Virginian gentleman not the booze swilling ill tempered quick to fight lout that John Cusack portrayed him as. The script is too cliche and predictable. My Grade: D+
