Upon discovering that a psychotic serial killer has been using his writings as inspiration, legendary author Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack) joins forces with a bright, young Baltimore detective to catch the maniac and end his reign of terror. Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) was investigating a vicious murder when he realized the crime scene bore a striking resemblance to a mystery story that was just published in the local newspaper. The author of that ominous tale was Edgar Allan Poe, a brilliant young writer whose status as a social outcast catches the attention of the diligent detective. Shortly after Poe is questioned by the authorities, detectives stumble upon yet another murder scene that seems to have been inspired by the author's morbid writings. Convinced that the killer will once again use Poe's writings as a springboard to murder, Detective Fields recruits the reclusive author to help piece together a pattern to the crimes and stop the madman before he can strike again. Brendan Gleeson and Alice Eve co-star in this tense period thriller from director James McTeigue (V for Vendetta). ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
A REALLY GOOD who-done-it.! Clues in a beautiful prose. Don't have to be familiar with Poe's works and his looks, but it helps. John Cusak does an eerily close job of looking and acting like the records of Poe. (Having been to a couple of Poe's homes made it even better.)
I really wished this had been a mini series rather than a movie in order to give someone only slightly familiar with Poe more insight into WHY this story was told. I thought this was a BRILLIANTLY told story, but there could have been entire episodes of a series each individually devoted to one or another Poe classic. I loved this movie and just wanted more.
It was an enjoyable film. I don't think that the copycat cases were presented as elegantly and effectively as they could have been, especially for the viewer unfamiliar with the works of Edgar Allan Poe. A lot more could have been done in this department. Fell a little flat and rushed there, almost like they were editing to make the 1.5 hr time limit for the film. Too bad, because this could have been a masterpiece in the right director's hands.
This movie was garbage. Complete snoozefest. I have no idea how I made it through the entire film. John Cusack was horrific. You really rooted for the killer in this movie.
A good movie, though could have easily been a tad better. Still, I do recommend renting. Cusack and the other actors put in great performances. Scenery was realistic. Storyline was more authentic than prior versions. The downside was Alice Eve's performance and script, and the ending slid downhill faster than a torrential mudslide. That fault is on the shoulder of the screenplay writers.
Bravo to John Cusack and Luke Evans
such great acting. If you love thrillers for Halloween this year, this is a classic to watch, everything about this movie is a joy to watch even the gore, excellent script and top notch acting by all and James McTeigue rocks as Director!!!!
