Can't Stop the Music (1980)
Member Rating:
Glitz producer Allan Carr tries to cash in on the late-'70s disco boom with Can't Stop the Music -- a film of such Brobdingnagian banality that it almost in itself stopped the disco movement cold. Comedienne Nancy Walker directed this musical chronicle, purporting to relate the legend of the formation of the disco group The Village People. Valerie Perrine is Samantha Simpson, a helpful ex-model who attempts to get her roommate, Jack Morrell's (Steve Guttenberg), songwriting career off the ground by assembling a motley group of her Greenwich Village friends (The Village People) together to cut a demo tape of Jack's ditties. All Samantha has to do is charm the square lawyer Ron White (Bruce Jenner) in order to get him to listen to The Village People's scintillating disco strains. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

So campy, so much fun! I wish I remembered how great that time of life was...but I thought it was just SILLY how the Village People played it "straight." Puh-lease!

This movie brought back memories for me! When I saw it in a cinema in 1980, I really enjoyed it - I thought it was the greatest movie ever. I felt it should have won a Tony, or an Oscar....anything! But now that I'm older (pushing 50), the movie seemed super corny. But I still get a kick from the musical numbers though, like David Hodo doing "I Love You To Death," and my ultimate favorite, "Milk Shake." I would occasionally play music from the Disco era and share it with my 12 year old son. Because of that, he is very familiar with the music. This is his first time of actually seeing the Village People sort of in the "flesh". He really enjoyed the movie for the fact that he can now put the image of the group to the song.

Corney but cute - A fun movie to watch - Life was so simple then. Brought back lots of memories. The music is snappy and upbeat. Baby Boomers should like this one.

Can't Stop The Music is an awesome movie featuring The Village People who I can relate to. Splendidly cast with actors who can act and music unparalled, I give this movie a TEN!

This movie is really hilarious! The acting is SOOO bad, it is actually funny! I am old enough to remember the music of the Village People, and I still enjoy Disco music until this day. That was the main reason for us to rent this movie, to see some of the musical clips. (And those are really great, fantastic video clips of Disco. Also the Ritchie Family appears!) If you are looking for a real movie, you will be disapointed, but if you are in your late 40s and remember the group and Disco, you will most likely enjoy this little film.
