Judd Apatow's This Is 40 stars Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann star as Pete and Debbie, the same married couple they played in Apatow's Knocked Up. As the movie opens, Debbie is turning 40 but tells everybody she's younger. She runs a small, boutique clothing store that's breaking even financially, while Pete manages a retro-minded indie-music label that's under serious financial strain just as they are trying to launch a new album by Graham Parker. Their money troubles are compounded by Pete's dad Larry (Albert Brooks), who continually hits up his son for cash because he has toddler triplets after an overly successful fertilization treatment with his younger second wife. Debbie has daddy issues as well. Her father (John Lithgow), an emotionally cold, highly successful surgeon, seems to want no part of his daughter's life, even though they meet for lunch occasionally after not talking to each other for a lengthy period of time. All of these people, along with Debbie's trainer, Pete's employees, and salesgirls from Debbie's boutique, arrive at the couple's beautiful home for a birthday party where all the familial wounds are opened. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

It wasn't as good as Knocked up.

I'm a big fan of Judd Apatow. But this quasi-sequel to "Knocked Up", following up on the Pete and Debbie characters a few years later is a really frustrating movie. There are so many good moments, moments that are laugh out loud funny, or touching and real, that you want to scream as it keeps sliding into over-cute, or pushing for laughs, or cliché, or overly verbose, stopping to state literally what the audience has figured out long before. I felt like Apatow's tendency to make comedies that last over 2 hour is starting to catch up with him. The film feels needlessly padded. Every major storyline makes its point at least one more time than it needs to. That said, this is still way better than most Hollywood films. There are a lot of strong performances and solid writing. I appreciated how honest it is about how messy and hard life, marriage and families are. When it's good it's great.

According to this movie, When you turn 40, you become stupid and have no money.

I really liked this movie. If you're in you're 30s-40s, you can definately relate to something in the movie. My boyfriend and I both laughed through most of the movie.

160 minutes of one-liners perfect for an individual showcase of comedic talent. was there supposed to be a movie? another screenplay about the ridiculous LA lifestyle that, thankfully, the rest of America cannot relate to

This was a very long (2+ hours) waste of time. It wasn't funny and although it supposedly shows 'real life' moments, my real life moments are funnier and more mature than theirs. They were horrible parents, acted like they were in high school, lied to each other, whined about everything and both supposedly have enough drive to own and operate their own businesses? Yeah right.
