The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother (1975)
Member Rating:
Comic actor Gene Wilder made his debut as a writer and director in this period comedy in which he plays Sigerson Holmes, the older bother of famous detective Sherlock Holmes. For years, Sigerson has been living in his little brother's shadow, and he is convinced that he must constantly prove his superiority to his brother in all things at all times. Of course, he often fails, but one can't argue with his determination. In this story, Sherlock (Douglas Wilmer) and his faithful assistant, Watson (Thorley Walters), are called away from England on an assignment, and Sherlock asks Sigerson if he wouldn't mind looking into a case for him. With typically misguided enthusiasm, Sigerson is hot on the trail of a cache of missing government documents, whose theft may be the dirty work of the wicked Moriarty (Leo McKern). Sigerson is assisted in his investigation by Olville Sacker (Marty Feldman), a bumbling Scotland Yard detective who claims to have photographic hearing, and the mysterious and seductive Jenny Hill (Madeline Kahn). Gene Wilder rose to fame in the offbeat comedies of director Mel Brooks, so it was fitting that, for his first film as a director, Wilder cast Brooks in a cameo role (he's heard but not seen after discovering that the door he chose had the tiger, not the lady). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is a terrible movie and a waste of the talent of Madeline Kahn. Don't waste your time.

This movie was stupid and disgusting. Don't waste your time. I do not know how it got a PG rating. Not suitable for children of any age. Turned it off about halfway through when "breast fondling" started.

While this film does have a few chuckles here and there, it was basically just a waste of time. Gene Wilder and the rest of the cast are very talented, but, like Jerry Lewis and Steve Martin, Mr. Wilder requires a strong director to keep him focused and should never be allowed to direct himself again.

This film is unfunny, poorly plotted, badly costumed, and otherwise wretched. Not suitable for children, because of the sexual innuendo, and not suitable for adults, because of the lack of plot, conflict, resolution, or sympathy for any of the characters. A total waste of Leo McKern's talents.

I loved Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka (better than Johnny Depp IMO). However this movie, as seen through the eyes of a family time to spend together, was a disappointment to say the least. The movie plays out as one big (poorly done) running sexual innuendo after another, and once again IMO, this doesn't make for the best use of family time.

I'm a Gene Wilder fan and had never seen this movie before. It was very funny and enjoyable. I love his co-stars as well; Marty Feldman and Madelin Kahn. Indiviually they are all exceptional actors/actress IMO. I will buy this film in the near future. Oh, and Dom De Luis was fantastic, I didn't recognize him at first with the hair piece!

Well, I love Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman and Gilda Radner, but this movie was better kept in the 80's. It was in typical "Wilderesque" fashion, but really lacked the humor that they tried to portray. I watched some, fast forwarded it to the middle and then just quit. If you like the genre of the 80's comedy's and like these actors, then this might just have a chance, but I don't think so.

Fantastic film in the slapstick style of Mel Brooks. His Influence on Gene Wilder is apparent in this great movie. If you are a fan of Mel Brooks you will LOVE this movie. The silliness never stops from beginning to end.
