Inspired by Los Angeles Times writer Leslie Gornstein's article "A Jinx in a Box," this horror film from Ghost House Pictures and director Ole Bornedal (Nightwatch) tells the tale of a broken family that comes under attack from a malevolent supernatural entity of Jewish folklore. Shortly after her parents (Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick) divorce, a young girl purchases an ornate antique box at a yard sale. In the weeks that follow, the young girl forms an intense fixation on the box, her behavior growing increasingly bizarre as she falls into the grip of a diabolical apparition. When the girl's father discovers that the relic is in fact a holding cell for the disconnected soul of a deceased person who has been denied entry into the afterlife and needs a human host to inhabit, he fights to rid her of the evil that threatens to consume her body and soul. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

scary movie. sam rami is in love with demons. creepy feel, and morbid camera work. i enjoyed the jewish element, it was unique.

January 16, 2013....................In the extras it tells of the real box and how they got this to be based on something real is unknown to me, it looks like they made most of it all up. I thought this was a very good movie but it was not true.

I watched this over the weekend and though it claims to be "based on a true story" and isn't as such, it's an entertaining movie that gives off just right scare factor. The little gal is great and I look forward to seeing her in upcoming films.

VERY WELL DONE! I thought this would be yet another weak depiction loosely based on a story which is starting to wear thin. But no! The special effects were GREAT! The story is consuming and the dybbuk pure evil. Acting is superb and after watching the movie, I realized there was no blood or gore at all, yet there was no lack in the powerful feeling of SCARY that one comes away with. Kudos on the scare without gore! -the mark of a truly well done horror movie .

Whether this movie is based on a true story or not doesn't really matter to me. I watch for entertainment. This was a great movie. The acting was good by all but Natasha Calis (the young girl who gets possessed) ESPECIALLY shines. It's worth watching just to see how much talent she has. It is creepy (especially Natasha) and keeps your attention throughout.
