Transformed into a vampire and entombed for 200 years after betraying vengeful witch Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green), 18th century fishing magnate Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) returns to Collinwood Manor in 1972, only to find his once proud estate in ruins and his family plagued by macabre secrets. It was the year 1752 when Barnabas' parents came to America to expand their business empire. But after establishing the thriving New England fishing town of Collinsport, the family experienced a series of misfortunes when Barnabas fell for the gorgeous Josette DuPres (Bella Heathcoate) and cast aside beautiful witch Angelique, who cursed him with eternal life and buried him deep in the earth. Returning home to Collinwood Manor after being dug up by a construction crew in 1972, Barnabas learns that Angelique has nearly driven his family out of business, and turned the townspeople against them. Determined matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) employs live-in psychiatrist Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter) and enchanting governess Victoria Winters (Heathcoate) to try and help young David Collins (Gully McGrath) get over the mysterious death of his beloved mother, but as Barnabas gets acquainted with his distant ancestors -- including Elizabeth's black-sheep brother Roger (Jonny Lee Miller) and headstrong teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz) -- their suffering weighs heavily on his shoulders. Later, when Angelique learns that Barnabas has returned on a mission to restore his family to its former glory and fallen for the radiant Victoria (who is actually Josette reincarnate), she vows to make his suffering unimaginable if he should dare refuse her once again. Jackie Earle Haley, Bella Heathcote, and Gulliver McGrath co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This movie had so much quirkyness, and dumb humor that it ACTUALLY saved it from becoming a zero star movie. Unfortunately the humor only notched it up a star and it still stagnated and will go down as one of depps more embarrassing movies..Had a greta debut at box office but by week three , theaters were empty on the showing of this flick. Will be a great rental.

I absolutely loved this movie . . . but I pretty much love anything with Johnny Depp in it.

Okay....I really liked this movie ! The special effects in this movie are SOOOOO fun !!! The eerie gothic girl ghost...the laughing paintings on the wall...the carved wooden creatures throughout the Collins house that suddenly came alive....and Eva Green plays a wicked but great villain. But no doubt and best of all, 70's rocker Alice Cooper who, 40-years later, looks just as good as he did when I saw he and his band in 1972 at the San Diego Sports Arena - - - AMAZING ! This was a fun show...but also had some dark moments, which is soooo "Tim Burton." Johnny Depp again plays another odd character but seemingly is a perfect fit for the role of "Barnabus Collins" - - - sadly, Michelle Pfeiffer and her Botox "fish lips" seemed to get in the way of her basic pronunciation throughout the movie (why on EARTH do beautiful actresses like her do this to themselves ??! Seriously !) Anyway great fun with some very dark & gothic moments for the vampires and werewolves found deep down in all of us.

This movie is different in a good way. You must watch it, you might be surprised on how many ways the movie was different from others.

Highly recommend, especially for fans of the TV soap. It's nostalgic for fans, and if not, don'™t have to know the background to enjoy it. Also nostalgic of the late 60s & early 70s. Lots of cultural and music references to that period. Great soundtrack. The main characters and their personalities are all there, as is the core plot. A few plot contrivances that move the story along to fit the constraints of a movie. Johnny Depp played Barnabas quite well. Not quite as laid-back as the TV character, still gory, but a little more likable. The movie not really spooky or scary. Lots of very funny scenes and one-liners. I would not quite call it a parody, but with a little nudge by the writers, it could have been (ala Young Frankenstein). A frantic and funny love-making scene between Barnabas and Angelique, along the lines of the one with Pitt and Jolie in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, only on steroids. The ending was a bit over-the-top, but it served the story.

Loved this movie. It has the right mixture of Dark Shadows gothic story line, drama and comedy, costumes, special effects. Very entertaining for a "Dark Shadows" fan. Loved the ending.

Horribly, creepy movie. It reminded me of Sweeney Todd, which was also very creepy!

Watching this movie will make you homicidal. You find yourself begging for something, anything interesting or exciting to happen, but it never does. This movie is boring, stupid, and did I say stupid? What a waist of money and time. Hated this horrible movie. The experience would have been the same if he would have stayed in the coffin the entire film. It sucked!

A drama that seemed to ride the fence between scary and funny while not quite reaching either goal. The first hour was very slow and even though the movie did pick up some steam in the last 30 minutes it was not enough to revive it. The cinematography and some acting by Eva Green was great but not worth seeing.

I enjoyed this movie very much! It is melodramatic, but it was supposed to be. I have not seen the original. I think Johnny Depp was perfect for this role. I found it humerous and scary at the same time. I hope they make another.

FUN MOVIE! I imagine it got hits in popularity by not being close enough to the Dark Shadows series' story line. Though it is supposed to be a comedy, I found my heart quiet breaking for Barnabas' sad love life. The actresses were not pretty as in the series/original movie. They have this new modern emaciated, sickly look so in. vogue in EU. Johnny Depp - what can I say - was Depp at his finest, which is consistently so. If one release all preconceived notions of the series, it is quiet a good movie, especially with the updates in cinematography/special effects, etc. Soundtrack was great, though couple of tunes were new to me.

I liked the movie. It had a different twist to it than the old TV series one. Had comedy along with action. Enjoyed it.
