A mischievous magician gains the wisdom to become a powerful ruler after being swept away to a land of magic and mystery as director Sam Raimi and screenwriters Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole) explore the genesis of author L. Frank Baum's enduring tales of Oz. Shady illusionist Oscar Diggs (James Franco) enchants curious audiences at a Kansas circus. A self-professed con man, he's a fast-talking performer who aspires to follow in the footsteps of inventors like Thomas Edison. Oscar is being chased across the circus grounds by the rampaging Strongman when a tornado blows in and everyone runs for cover. Seeing a hot-air balloon as his only chance for escape, the illusionist jumps in and cuts himself free. Magically transported to the wondrous world of Oz, he soon encounters Theodora (Mila Kunis), a temperamental witch who surmises that he is the wizard named after their land (Oscar's nickname is Oz), foretold to fall from the sky, defeat a nasty witch, and ascend to the throne. Theodora takes Oscar to the Emerald City to meet her sister Evanora (Rachel Weisz), a powerful witch who reveals that he cannot become the rightful ruler of Oz until he's accomplished his mission. Later, as Oscar and his new flying-monkey companion Finley (voice of Zach Braff) prepare to face their fearsome enemy, they're joined by the fragile but fearless China Girl (voice of Joey King) and benevolent witch Glinda the Good (Michelle Williams), who help them prepare for the arduous battle ahead. Together with the brave people of Oz, Oscar draws up a plan to rid the land of evil once and for all, and become the great and powerful king who will rule from his throne in the Emerald City. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Great story and fabulous production, especially in 3D. The cinematography and color is amazing. Can be somewhat terrifying for young children. One of Disney's best!

I saw this movie in 3D in my local theatre 2 times within 5 days!!! Awesome sequel to The Wizard of Oz.

Poor script, poor acting, poor direction. Empty and devoid of mirth, Sam Raimi and James Franco manage to extinguish the feeling of lightness and joy that we all remember from the original. Franco's smug grin takes the viewer out of the movie and into another fantasy land - one where you slap him until it wipes that irritating look off of his face. None of the three miscast witches can hold a candle to Margaret Hamilton. Sadly, the whole mess sinks below even the lowest of lowered expectations.

A must see on Imax - one of the best for this venue! Colorful and artistic, it kept us entertained.

This was an interesting tale on how the Great and Powerful Oz came to the land of Oz and why he hid behing the curtain using the voice machine. It starts as black and white and turn to color one they enter Oz. The story isn't anywhere near as good as the original Wizard of Oz but it is light and entertaining, some of it is hokey, but kids enjoy it. There are some scary parts with the monkeys for kids under 8.

The only downside to this movie is that James Franco cannot act - part of that played into his character as a con man but in the serious bits, his lack of acting ability was distracting. Other than that, the movie was entertaining, visually stunning, and the rest of the cast did a very fine job. Worth watching!

Absolutely Perfect – This movie is so much better than you can imagine. It is a great compliment to the classic that we all know and love.

A pretty decent prequel and an entertaining re-imagining of the Oz story, with a few nods to the 1939 movie as well. Franco was probably not the strongest choice for the lead, but the rest of the cast holds their own against all the expectations that come with such a project.

This movie is just as scary as the "Wizard of Oz'' when I was a kid, so this one may not be a movie for small kids. In no way will this tarnish the memory of "The Wizard Of Oz", enjoyable and entertaining. Sam Raimi is one let down Director. By the time of two hours and ten minutes Raimi, proves he dosen't understand the deeper dreams of the people that consume it. The actors and the writing is top-notch. James Franco is powerful and more charismatic then the first, Wizard of Oz. Overall a good movie. This will not be the movie of the year. Saved only by the 3D effects. Watch it at home. THREE STARS.
