Doris Day looks no more like the real Calamity Jane than you or I do, but this 1953 film is intended as a lighthearted musical, not a historical tract. As portrayed by the freckled Ms. Day, Jane is a rootin', tootin' shootin' hoyden in the western town of Deadwood. When she isn't tearing up the town, Jane spends her time cussing out Wild Bill Hickok (Howard Keel). The plot gets under way when Jane promises the citizens of Deadwood that she can persuade classy Chicago stage star Adelaide Adams (Gale Robbins) to perform at the local opry house. Through a case of mistaken identity, Jane brings Adelaide's maid Katie (Allyn Ann McLerie) back to town. Katie proves to be a success all the same, and out of gratitude promises to make a "lady" out of Jane, who is sweet on handsome Lt. Gilmartin (Philip Carey). When the lieutenant chooses Katie over Jane, our heroine is heartbroken--until she realizes that she has loved Wild Bill Hickok all along, and that the feeling is mutual so far as Hickok is concerned. The peppy musical score by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster includes the Oscar-winning Secret Love, which became a million-selling hit for Doris Day. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

My husband turned up his nose when he saw I had ordered this one, and said I might have to watch it by myself. But I don' t watch tv by myself ; ) so he loved it! I did, too. Doris Day is an absolute dish and very daring as an actress & comedienne. You rarely see actresses mugging and risking looking like a dope these days -- by comparison, modern females on screen are so boring. And she doesn't get into any kind of undress in this, but those long legs are very hard to conceal and look spectacular even in buckskins. She's a very athletic performer and so the show is amusing and exciting in an unusual way. We actually were still talking about it the next day. I hope DD is getting residuals ; ) The cultural commentary on the disc is interesting, too, for a comparison of "then and now in America". Check it out!

Calamity Jane though not a new action and syfi block buster. This movie offers much on its own. Calamity Jane shows everything from side spliting comedy, to a little depth, and a gritier side of "Doris Day". In all a light hearted classic with a happy ending

This movie was dull and boring. I rented it because my daughter's camp was performing it. Not much of a story. Annoying accent made it hard to understand Doris Day at times. I fast forwarded thru some of the bad songs.

unfortunately I was sent "South Park 3" instead of Calamity Jane in the wrong sleeve so I never even got to see Calamity Jane!
