Caged Heat (1974)
Member Rating:
Considered the quintessential "girls in prison" flick of the 1970s, novice director Jonathan Demme's Caged Heat is set in a hellish American woman's penitentiary run by vicious, wheelchair-bound Barbara Steele. Statuesque convict Erica Gavin is forced to undergo horrible (but legal) tortures when she is falsely accused of trying to escape. Gavin and fellow con Juanita Brown decide to make a real break, but return to prison to rescue a friend who is about to be lobotomized by the sadistic prison doctor. Then they stage a robbery, only to find a group of male robbers at the bank ahead of them. A final shootout in the prison yards brings the film to a bloody climax. Caged Heat was also released under the title Renegade Girls. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a Jonathan Demme classic made with Roger Corman's blessing. It is of smaller budget than I had expected but worth the watch. Considered a classic "women in prison" flick, it shows the injustices of the prison system, and the desperate women trying to break free and get away from the cruel and inhumane treatment they are forced to suffer at the hands of their captors. Plenty of gratuitous shower scenes and campy acting to satisfy the most jaded B-movie fan.

Sexploitation at it's best. This is low budget but sets the standard for female prison flicks. A must see if you like this genre.

I doubt that there are this many hot babes, or as much nudity, in real life women's prisons. Best part of this flick is Babs Steele's socio-pathic prison warden. Her fiend flicks are much better...

Not bad for a women-in-prison movie. At least there is some semblance of a story here as well as a plethora of au natural shower scenes. Discovering Erica Gavin was a joy and the one lady you should keep an eye on throughout, though there are others just a notch below, some in wet T-shirts. Watch out for the masochistic prison doctor, who thinks he's in Auschwitz or somewhere.

This is a classic B movie, but I thought it was enjoyable. The acting was suspect in some parts, but overall what's not to like about the "women in prison" movies?
