Director Richard Linklater teams with writer Skip Hollandsworth for this darkly comic docudrama detailing the unusual friendship between a likable Texas mortician and a wealthy but reviled widow, and the shocking crime that followed. Inspired by Hollandsworth's 1998 Texas Monthly article that first caught the attention of Linklater, Bernie takes place in Carthage, TX, where effeminate mortician Bernie Tiede (Jack Black) enjoys a reputation as a friendly and upstanding member of the community. Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine), on the other hand, couldn't hold a lower position on the local social scale. Repressed and bitter, nasty Marjorie has isolated herself from her neighbors, and as a result has been essentially shunned in her small town. The moment Bernie shows Marjorie a shred of kindness, she clings to him tightly and refuses to let go. Meanwhile, as Marjorie becomes Bernie's sugar mama and the pair becomes inseparable, the local rumor mill begins to churn. Eventually, her intense jealousy becomes too much for Bernie to take. When the caustic widow's body is discovered stuffed in her own freezer, local District Attorney Buck Davidson (Matthew McConaughey) vows that justice will be served, but he finds it difficult to build a convincing case against Bernie as the locals rally to his defense. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Jack Black & Shirley MacLaine are both wonderful. It gets hard to tell the actual Carthage townfolk form the actor(s). It is the funniest movie I have seen in a long time. If you want to go see a movie & just laugh & enjoy... this is the movie! I plan on buying the DVD when it comes out! :)

Jack Black was so perfect in this role. Shirley MacLaine also excellent as sour rich woman. Both of them were very believable victims/ perpetrators! LOVE THIS so much, we will buy it... and we don't buy many movies!

Only Jack Black could play this one convincingly. Loved the makeup changes to display the softening of Marjorie (Shirley MacLaine) early in their relationship. Interesting character development and I enjoyed the ending.

An amazing case of "truth being stranger than fiction". This is surely Jack Black's best role/performance. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie! Witty, charming, funny, poignant, sometimes maddening. A theatrical illustration of "no good deed goes un-punished"!

I really enjoyed watching Jack Black in this role because he was comedic but at the same time playing an actual serious role. The story line is one I have seen on TV real life crime stories plenty of times and it was neat to see that they actually made of movie out of a true story.

Would not watch this twice. Quirky is the right word everyone is using to describe this one and it is dead on. I found it hard to watch Jack Black play this character, singing awful music and showtunes, and dancing around on stage in a musical, I wish I could get that out of my head. Lifetime could of made this movie with less narative and the simple paragraph at the end.

Jack Black deserves an academy award for his performance in this movie. He is funny, subtle, and to top it all he is a versatile singer with a fine voice. What makes it special of course is that it is based upon a true story - as strange as it seems. The filmmakers did an excellent job using locals from Waco Texas to play some of the parts. It's fine entertainment.
