Butterflies Are Free (1972)
Member Rating:
Leonard Gershe based his play Butterflies are Free on a real-life blind attorney. The film version stars Edward Albert as Don Baker, a self-reliant, sightless young man who becomes the object of affection for kooky Jill (Goldie Hawn). Spending most of the film in nothing but her underwear, Jill makes love to Don, then tries to help him break free from the smothering influence of his mother, a children's-story writer (Eileen Heckart). The situation grows tense when Jill's boyfriend (Paul Michael Glaser) enters the scene. Eileen Heckart won an Academy Award for her performance. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

great performances oneof the few films that worked as a play being filmed--not filmic at all, but it worked sappy w/ all the song repeats--but overall a real feel good movie Eileen Heckart is great--ARNOLD & HAWN are beautiful just to look at...

This is a very good movie. All three of the main characters are great in it. There are lots of people out there who should see this movie for the very fact that he does almost everything for himself.

A romantic story in the big city. I think that every youth in the age of 16-17 should see it. What "care" about the others meens. To forget the every day self sufficiency.

Goldie Hawn is wonderful in this film, I can see why, from this early film in her career, she became a mega star. Enjoyable from start to finish, Eileen heckart gives a great and sincere performance, good enough for her to win a best supporting actress Oscar. Only Edward Albert Jr's performance does not ring true.

A movie that makes you ask yourself what it means to be in trouble, what it means to be courageous and what it means to be in love, and who is really in these conditions.
