Inspired by author Matt Baglio's nonfiction book of the same name, director Mikael Håfström's supernatural thriller traces the experiences of a young seminary student who discovers the true power of faith after being drafted into the Vatican's Exorcism School and confronted by the forces of darkness. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
The movie is not bad at all. It's certainly not one of the very best, but it is still very good for a horror flick. Horror fans will not be disappointed. The classic story line: a young priest becomes a believer in The Devil and, thus, God. Hopkins is terrifying and elevates a so-so movie into a much better one. Yes, I'd recommend seeing it both at the movies and on dvd.
Sorry, with Hopkins in it, I thought this was gonna be an excellent movie. It left me very disappointed.Don't waste your money going to the movies - wait for the DVD.
O Boy did they put together a juicy trailer! still looking around for where they got those scenes from. The editor was a magician. It felt like a long time before our journey began, regardless of actual length it was stagnant. Cheap shots of waitress' legs as characters sit around a bar and discuss their college plans. Perhaps it was so low energy because the director Mikael Hafstrom, though I like him fine (I enjoyed his drama Evil) was not originally a horror director, he doesn't have the proper storytelling skills or eye for worlds. This should have been a project for a primarily horror/fantasy/ scifi filmmaker such as Guillermo Del Toro, Tarsem Singh or Alex Proyas. Had no sense of atmosphere. Who cared about these characters? All the flat nonchalant acting, just a few grisly images without any creative visuals or titillating plot details. People who like this just scare real easily or haven't seen any recent horror films... seen 1 and you've seen this!
This movie has no aspirations beyond rehashing the exorcism films we've all seen, not the least of which is The Exorcist. Father Lucas jokingly asks Michael if he was expecting pea soup and a 360-degree head-turn (signaling to the audience that this is less exciting only because it's Real Life, so we should find it more exciting). However the rest of it is there: The possessed contort, change in appearance and taunt the hero with the prospect of underage sexuality, his painful memories and the subjects of his guilt, just as Regan did in 1973. (It's "suggested by" a work of non-fiction, but it ends up following the same old blueprint.) "Suggested by" doesn't make it fresh.

A fine example of wasted potential! The exorcism school would have been an interesting story to explore, but was left by the wayside. We never discovered if Hopkin's character was a sham or the real deal. The pace crawls
