Of Gods and Men (2010)

Men of faith find their pacifist beliefs put to the test in this drama from filmmaker Xavier Beauvois, inspired by a true story. Christian (Lambert Wilson) is the leader of an order of Trappist monks living in the hills outside Algiers. The community outside the monastery is almost exclusively Muslim, and the monks have worked to foster understanding between themselves and their neighbors; they observe Muslim traditions, are well versed in the Koran, and provide medical and charitable assistance to the townspeople. The monastery is an oasis of calm and peace as Algeria is caught up in a civil war, with forces led by Muslim extremists leading a bloody campaign against the nation's rulers. Christian and his monks do not wish to take sides in a conflict they believe is immoral; they refuse the protection of the military while also denying aid and comfort to the insurgents. The monks' efforts to remain outside the war, however, have ugly consequences when they're taken hostage by a band of Islamic revolutionaries. Des Hommes et des Dieux (aka Of Gods and Men) was an official selection at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I'm glad I saw this superb film in a theatre, for so far, it appears that BB will provide it only in Blu-ray format. I watched it with a group of movie-loving friends who take turns picking a film each month for us to view. Afterwards at dinner, it turned out that one of us had served with the Peace Corps in North Africa. He gave additional political and cultural insights on what we'd just seen. A profound and inspiring choice! BB, can you also offer it in a regular DVD format? I'd order it in a minute.

This film requires your attention but it is very slow moving, subdued, serene and much of the action is the daily living of the monks.

Ann - It is a 2 disc release with both blu-ray and DVD. Add to q and just remove the blu-ray and only get the DVD. I'm doing that to just get the Blu-ray, so there's an extra DVD available.

Super Movie. Slow and tedious, I think the pace of the film is a great asset in illustraiting the self sacrifice of the monks in their everyday lives, being interrupted, unexpectedly, by the horror of the threats of the Islamic Fundamentalists.

Good story, and the subtitles were large and in yellow so they could be read easily. Good film with a very sad ending.

Maybe because I am so used to American movies, which are concise, to the point, tug at our hearts just at the right time... I felt like this movie wasted a lot of time of repeating the monks singing Christian songs. Then, at the end, when it is very important to show an emotional ending, it just ended...

Contemplative exploration of monks wrestling with their consciences regarding their ultimate purpose in life. Very slow moving and could have been about 20 minutes shorter with some more editing; otherwise, interesting enough to watch to the end...but only once. For a better movie about self sacrifice in the line of Christian duty, watch "The Mission."

This is a beautiful film, about the love and faith that gives a tiny, impoverished group of monks courage and resolve during the Algerian civil war in 1996. As touching and deeply felt as it is, it relies heavily on religious dogma, religious ceremony and prayer at great length. The courage and faith of the monks is impressive, but to die for God only makes sense to those who believe in their concept of a deity. Lovely work for Christian believers and even Moslems.
