Writer/director J.J. Abrams teams with producer Steven Spielberg for this period sci-fi thriller set in the late '70s, and centering on a mysterious train crash in a small Ohio town. Summer, 1979: a group of young friends are filming a Super-8 movie when a pickup truck derails a speeding train. When the locals start to disappear and even the inquisitive deputy can't come up with answers, suspicions emerge that the incident was anything but an accident. As the truth finally begins emerge, no one is prepared to learn what now stalks the unsuspecting citizens of this once quiet community. Kyle Chandler and Elle Fanning star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Have seen this movie three times now. Loved the development and dynamics of the 5 young friends. One brave, one not-so-brave, one artistic type, a little romance and an unrequited puppy love. Besides the sub-plot of Jackson's Mom's death and the fathers bitterness towards Alices Dad because of it. Yet in the end they team up to save the kids from the real star of the show.
What a multi-layered fantasy movie! So many relationships intertwined, along with a fascinating basic story line about a shape-shifting alien's desire to go home.
I'm sure I will rent it again. It is a fun movie, without being too alien-esque. Lot of human emotions being exchanged, young and old. Recommended viewing.
who was the target audience for this hokum? little kids and three year olds? i actually thought this movie would have some appeal for adults. boy was i naive. instead it was just a rehash of old Spielberg kiddie fare like 'E.T.' and 'Goonies'.
the whole thing got so schmaltzy it makes Disney's 'Princess & the Frog' look like hard core adult entertainment. i didn't like the whole cutie-pie 'E.T.' premise either. i didn't sympathize with the alien monster at all. i mean if he was supposed to be so civilized and advanced and sympathetic, why did he eat people and bite off their heads and stuff. i thought the alien was a menace to the known universe and should have been destroyed.
The beginning had a Goonies throwback feel to it, the second half was more like Cloverfield Part 2. But, altogether good and a pretty interesting story.
This movie started off in a very very intriguing manner, with great characterization and a compelling plot, all from a kid's point of view. We were hooked! Then it devolved into a dark version of ET. Then the entire town started to blow up. When it was over, I was scratching my head because so many things were left unresolved that I was left unsatisfied. If Spielberg has gotten so lazy that he does not want to work hard to make a good movie, he should consider retiring. There are probably many out there waiting for their chance.
Honestly one of the greatest scifi movies of all time. It was amazingly well-directed and acted too. I have to say this is one of my top favorite movies of all time. Definitely worth the watch! It's filled with suspense, action, humor, just everything.
I was happy yet dissatisfied with this movie. I hated that they kept playing 80's songs repeatedly in a very short period just to let the viewer know what year they were in. Same with the A-Track. What i hated was when the attire wasnt even fitting to the decade at all. Also the movie left many things unanswered and some things could have been taken out completely. The little boys mother dying actually had no relevance to the actual story and was truly useless. They could have accomplished the same thing by just saying the blonde guy was an irresponsible drunk
