A down-on-his-luck illusionist befriends a pretty admirer, and finds that his constant quest to impress her may be his ultimate downfall in this animated fable based on an original screenplay by Jacques Tati and directed by Sylvain Chomet. Now that the theaters and large performance venues have been taken over by rock bands and pop singers, the illusionist has been forced to ply his trade at small gatherings in bars, cafés, and basements in order earn a living. One day, while performing in a small Scottish pub located on a remote island that has only recently been wired for electricity, the illusionist encounters a young girl named Alice, who is captivated by his otherworldly abilities. Alice believes that the downtrodden performer possesses genuine supernatural powers, and agrees to accompany him on a trip to Edinburgh, where he's scheduled to perform at a modest, out-of-the-way theater. Her affection and enthusiasm inspire the illusionist, who in turn uses his talent to lavish her with a series of extravagant gifts. Unable to muster the courage to tell his starry-eyed admirer the truth about his trade, the illusionist continues giving until he's got nothing more to offer. This picture marked Chomet's first following the 2003 arthouse smash The Triplets of Belleville. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I was quite charmed at first with the animation. But it was sooooooo slow....

While this film was somewhat darker than the Triplets of Belleville, I preferred it because the conflict was largely internal rather than external. Two lonely people establish a temporary father-daughter relationship, broken by economic necessities. The end was strange. The French illusionist leaves the Gaelic-speaking girl a note in English.

Break out the mellow, nestle in a pillow, and float along with this dreamlike and painterly Tati gem. It is achingly beautiful, moral, uplifting, and brilliant. And for those who think it is too slow, please stop with the caffeinated drinks. This film is chill.

Another boring animated cartoon, however, I am still looking forwrd to seeing "The Triplets of Belleville" -- it must be better, For me this movie lacked dialogue even if they had added some, slow and boring too.

We turned this off after 20 minutes. It took too long to get into, and I didn't care enough about the main character to keep watching. Animation was beautiful -- story development weak.

SSSSllllooooooowwww. It took forever to tell the story. Still not sure what that story was. The only redeeming quality was the beautiful scenery/drawing/ of the movie.

A charming, whimsical, gallic piece of fluff. Thoroughly enjoyable! And no one gets KILLED!

A very "French" type story...takes a while to build, but the characters are well-drawn (excuse the pun), the scenes are very attractive and the story has a satisfying ending. Don't expect a fairy tale finish, though. Younger kids won't appreciate this either, the themes (loneliness, futility of work) are more adult. Worth your time to check it out. It will stick with you for a couple days.

Should be noted this was a cartoon - not a movie

As with The Triplets of Belleville, you have to expect something very different, unusual and unique. But the amazing animation (personalities, scenery) for me made it a joy to watch. Definitely for those who like independent, out of the ordinary, new experiences.

Carol C. I absolutely loved this film. I adore "The Triplets of Belleville" which is made by the same people and bears many similarities. If you love Jacques Tati you'll love it for its exquisite evocation of his inimitable style. The story is from a script done by Tati years ago. Its wonderfully drawn and the scenes of Edinburgh and Ireland and England are brilliant. The story is quite poingnant and touching. Lots of humorous touchs too. Great production.

A beautifully done movie. Plodddingly slow at times. It takes the time to tell the story.
