I remember when this show started on NBC, it was new to me as i had never seen the orignal soap opera. I love this show, I was so pleased to see it on DVD. I will say that seeing it again after all these years the special effects were not very good and even cheesy at times but the theme of life long love made it work.
This show was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. I'm happy to see that it's available to see again on dvd. I remember the plot being quite intricate and entertaining.
I loved the original and I'd hoped that was what I was getting. Despite that I decided to give it a try, especially since it had a pretty good cast. But it did not compare to the original. Ben Cross's Barnabas was overacted and could not compare to Jonathan Frid's portrayal of Barnabas...I also thought some of the other acting was not up to par and the characters were flat. I tried, but couldn't even get to the end of the first disk of episodes. If you are a true fan of the original Dark Shadows, I'd be very surprised if you'll like this. I did not.
I used to watch the original Dark Shadows when I was in high school and subsequently on the Sci Fi Channel, and am very familiar with the story line. Even with the new actors and actresses, and the modifications to some of the characters, this is still a wonderful show, to me. Although I will always think of Barnabus as being portrayed by Jonathan Frid, Ben Cross delivers well in this newer version; and while I miss Lara Parkerâs Angelique, Lysette Anthony who fills the role does a fine job. Barbara Steele is an excellent replacement for Grayson Hall as Dr Julia Hoffman. This series, although much shorter, still captures the haunting melancholy of Collinwood, the Collins family, and the timeless love-hate relationship of Angelique and Barnabus that transcends time itself. It is still an eerie, supernatural romance that remains unique 42 years after it first aired on ABC in 1966.
The new version of Dark Shadaows....all I can say..it's wonderful!!!! I am going to buy it that is how much I loved it.I loved all the details in the movie and the house, how beautiful it is and just everything about it.I would recommend this to any Dark Shadows fan and if you love vampire stories.
After these reviews am now curious and will get this to watch. I have the set (tho its on vcr tapes) of the old one with Frid and original cast. i had collected them from a tape club most are not even yet opened - but always watched the old one when on tv long ago and think i'll put them on that site to get rid of now so those that were hoping for the old original and may still have a vcr player around or you can get them on to dvd look em up I guess they should be in vintage section for sure.
