Robert L. Pike's crime novel Mute Witness makes the transition to the big screen in this film from director Peter Yates. In one of his most famous roles, Steve McQueen stars as tough-guy police detective Frank Bullitt. The story begins with Bullitt assigned to a seemingly routine detail, protecting mafia informant Johnny Ross (Pat Renella), who is scheduled to testify against his Mob cronies before a Senate subcommittee in San Francisco. But when a pair of hitmen ambush their secret location, fatally wounding Ross, things don't add up for Bullitt, so he decides to investigate the case on his own. Unfortunately for him, ambitious senator Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn), the head of the aforementioned subcommittee, wants to shut his investigation down, hindering Bullitt's plan to not only bring the killers to justice but discover who leaked the location of the hideout. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

Bullitt was a good flick. Everything one has come to love about McQueen and the style of movie he seems to be in. His presence on screen and his cut-to the point characters. Camera angles and scene framing that few think about today. The story was good, a bad-ass cop that gets it done and following a code of ethics that even political pressure can't bend. A car chase scene through San Francisco was done well and great to watch especially if you know the area. Also a great untouched view into the late 60's that you don't get much anymore.

Magnificent. It has what is considered the fastest and most dangerous chase scene ever filmed, past and present. To me, the best McQueen film ever made.

Somewhat enjoyed this movie. We ordered it to see the car chase, which was good. Not really our type of movie, but we did find it interesting.

Classic police drama for its era. Excellent story and acting. Probably Steve McQueen's best performance.

Truly an original. One of the very first movies that presented a car chase scene that was not only exciting, but the car was actually driven by the actor (Steve McQueen). Add a great script and you have a 1st rate movie that has held up well through the years.

For a film with a high octane pedigree this thing drags on like lap 320 of the Sharpie 500. My wife and I had a long discussion as to just what the actual plot of this movie is. Seems to me that Steve McQueen wanders around investigating...something. He's charged with protecting someone who allows himself to be killed. Then McQueen chases and kills the killers. This is all after an hour and some change of McQueen looking cool and having disjointed conversations with his girlfriend. Also, Robert Vaughn shows up now and again to say something snarky and make unrealistic demands. Somewhere in the middle is an extremely silly car chase that had me laughing out loud. How many times can you lose the same hubcap?
