The son of a same-sex couple seeks out the sperm donor who made his birth possible in this comedy from writer/director Lisa Cholodenko. The committed parents of two teenage children, Nic (Annette Bening) and Jules (Julianne Moore), are about to send their daughter, Joni (Mia Wasikowska), off to college when her younger brother, Laser (Josh Hutcherson), asks for her help in tracking down his biological father. Reluctantly inquiring with the sperm bank, Joni leaves her number so the office can pass it along to Laser's father. Enthusiastic at the thought of meeting his long lost offspring, Paul (Mark Ruffalo) musters the courage to reach out, and the family tree grows a new branch. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

What looks to be a heartwarming (alternative) family drama takes a darker turn and leaves several loose ends unresolved. Overall, it was well acted, with likeable characters, and a superb performance by Annette Bening in particular.

I cannot think of a more perceptive movie that takes a funny and honest look at a marriage. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing a movie that deals with marriage, most are about the wedding or the divorce, this movie is something special. Funny and touching, with wonderful performances by Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. The movie has sharp witty dialogue and characters that are real and relatable. One of the true treasures of 2010.

I simply loved this movie but have to say that its definitely NOT for everyone. On the surface (if you can't really relate to it) it appears to be a bittersweet comedy with a serious twist. To some it might just appear as a "too graphic for me" type of movie. Yes there is lots of bedroom activity, nudity and prevocative language. There are loads of family adjustments that you are able to visualize-but what the heck, this is a family and families go through these things especially this type of family. This is the type of movie that you can get to feel "raw" emotion--it is happy, sad, somewhat angered and provocative how this family deals with a pretty predictable situation. Again, for the average movie watcher, don't feel that you can just jump into this--it is wrenching at times but very real. The acting was suberb by all. A wonderful movie.

This movie was ok. I have to say I watched it all the way through but probably wont ever watch it again. It's not the kind of movie you have to see over and over. The trailers showed the best parts.

This is billed as a comedy, but I think it's more of a romantic drama. Annette Bening is amazing, but the rest of the cast is just so-so.

The movie was actually pretty good up to the ending. Hated the ending. Yea it was probably realistic but hey, I see that every day in real life. Where is my escape? As a male and more importantly, a father, I was very disappointed with the ending.

Guy from rental store recommended it. Stopped watching after Mark Ruffalo appeared in the first 10 minutes or so. Love all the actors in the movie but too much sexual content for my family.
