The Buddy Holly Story (1978)
Member Rating:
From the time he was a high-school student in Lubbock, Texas until his tragic death at age 22 in 1959, Buddy Holly ignored the condemnation by townspeople and his conservative relatives and dedicated his life to the new music he became famous for performing: rock 'n roll. Gary Busey stars as Buddy Holly in this widely acclaimed big-screen biography and sings well enough on camera for the film's adapted musical score to win an Oscar. Among the classic songs by Buddy Holly and the Crickets which can be heard are: Oh Boy, That'll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, and Not Fade Away. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

What a great performance by all involved.. especially Busey. I have come to realize Buddy Holly revolutionized music.. this movie is oustanding as well. Charles Martin Smith is also superb--everyone is. The movie should have been more indepth, and longer at that. But it's quite well-done.

Just as good as when I saw it first way back when. Even though it seemed like a low budget film, it was still enjoyable and I watched with my kids this time, then La Bamba and Sweet Dreams, all fabulous!

Just saw this film in 2012. Pretty good, not great. Did not like the ending, more could have been done with that. Also, sometimes too much music for too long. Would have liked to have known more about him and the Cricketts background back in Lubbock.

Great performance by Gary Busey - embodied Buddy Holly perfectly. Music was good as well but not well-contexted within the film. Other actors were just alright. Worth watching at least once
