Director Terry Gilliam adroitly applies his Monty Python sensibilities upon the "career" of famed German prevaricator Baron von Munchausen. Played herein by John Neville, the baron is seen quelling a war that he himself started, flying into the stratosphere on the back of a cannonball, ballooning to the moon, exploring the innards of a volcano, being swallowed by a whale....In short, all of Munchausen's fabulous lies are here presented as "truth," played out in full view of nonplussed witnesses Eric Idle, Charles McKeown, Jack Purvis, and Sarah Polley. Fringe benefits include several loving medium shots of jaybird-naked Uma Thurman as Boticelli's Venus and an extended unbilled cameo by Robin Williams -- that is, by the head of Robin Williams -- as the King of the Moon. Filmed under considerable duress on a budget eventually exceeding 45 million dollars, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen never quite caught on with moviegoers, though it has enjoyed a lucrative afterlife on videocassette. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

For special effects, think Time Bandits. For humor, think Princess Bride. In this movie, the fairy tale character of Munchausen springs to life to save the day with his band of medieval super heroes. The story spans a broad spectrum of mythologies to create a bigger-than-life portrait of the wily, not altogether honest, Baron. If you need your imagination handed to you on a computer-generated platter, you might give up on some of the special effects. But if you're looking for something creative, fun and even moving, give it a try. It's a masterpiece in storytelling.

I loved this movie when it first came out, and Uma hasn't looked this good since. My kids and several others that came over to watch loved this movie. We have put it into the queue several times. I saw the one bad review here. Ignore it. Take the risk and enjoy this film. Uma Thurman, Eric Idle, John Neville... Well done and loads of fun. And the little girl, Polly, is captivating. She holds the characters together and the movie fails without her vibrance.

Robin Williams IS the KING OF THE MOON! Williams didn't want his name in the credits because he hated this film, as wrong as he is bout his politics, he's wrong about hating this film! You'll also find some other soon to be famous faces not mentioned in the staring roles: Look for a young Uma Thruman as Venus and Sting as a Austrian War Hero. This is a charming film, with a great story, and some great lines. The heros and villians are fun. The special effects are cheap, but it adds to the film rather then distracting. If you liked Time Bandits, you'll love the Baron. Ride the Cannon Ball, See the Baron!

This is one of my favorite movies. If you are a dreamer, you will love this movie. I'll take fantasy anyday over reality.

This is arguably Terry Gilliam's best movie ever. I liked Time Bandits but the ending was a joke. This film actually saw a lot of my concerns with some of his other movies largely vanish. It was such an epic tale of fantasy standing in the face of science and fact. It reminds the viewer that we shouldn't give up on dreams and stories just because society says we should. The cast was fantastic and John Neville was superb as the Baron. The problems and chaos surrounding the production of this movie are not even noticable on the screen, despite the fact it almost got cancelled several times. This is a movie I would not only love to own, but would more than willingly watch every so often. It's even a good family film, which is saying something for Gilliam's usual work.

This is one of my favorite Terry Gilliam films. Gilliams reaches into the imagination he cultivated with Monty Python and gives his audience a rich fantasy. Highly recommended for those who like the fantasy genre.

I missed this movie somehow. Back in the day I loved Time Bandits and Brazil. But I didn't think this movie even in the same league.

BLOCKBUSTER S.

The production was terrific and the cinematography was superb. The reason I can only rate two stars is due to the disconnected story which rambles too much for my taste.

This film is a waste of time. I would recommend skipping it.
