I've held up Pete as an idol for his basketball skills and dedication to his craft since I was in grade school, however now I hold him up as a hero and inspiration for the way he became so transparent about his life and his trust in God. The movie itself is very good as far as the storyline of Pete and his father Press's determination to be the best. Their vision for how the game was to be played and the abilities players could develop was light years ahead of their time. The basketball moves of Pete were a bit unrealistic and slow compared to the real speed of the game. But, to me the best part was seeing the live taping of his testimony. It is so powerful that it raises my love for Pete. As a new Christian myself, I'm so amazed to see how God works in people's lives. Thank you for making this edition of the movie. My husband and I loved this movie. It illustrates everything that's great about America, parenting, and determination.
We were so happy to learn that Pete eventually found Jesus. His was a life well lived. Was this review helpful? Yes

I really liked this movie; it was fun to see all the "moves" this kid had for playing basketball and the motivation from the encouragement his father gave him was great. This is how most of us in the older generations were raised: to be persistant and keep working for our dreams. Great inspirational movie!! Was this review helpful? Yes

Being a big Pete Maravich fan, I went into this movie expecting the best. I was very dissapointed as the acting was terrible and the games looked like they were being played in slow motion. The narration was uninspired and done in a monotone. This is a great story that was butchered in this 1991 version. It is a story that could be done so much better in 2007 with the expertise of a director like Penny Marshall. Was this review helpful? Yes

This movie could not have been more disappointing. The synopsis would suggest that the movie covered more than a fairy tale description of his 8th grade year. I was expecting something much more realistic and fact based. Was this review helpful? Yes

Run, don't walk from this movie. My family only kept watching as we laughed non-stop through the whole thing. Horrible acting, terrible script, as if written by a 7 year old. You simply have to watch this to appreciate how bad it is.
The script is one of those revisionist, let's make the white people feel good thing about how they invite the "negrahs" to play ball with them. It's so completely ridiculous, it is embarrassing. You see a completely racist coach invite a black team to play Pete's white team simply because Pete's super-enlightened Dad suggests that's what he do, as if he is being mind-melded by the Force.
Lastly, you simply have to watch to see bad 80s hair band music played in a early 1960s biography, and then look closely at the extras in the stands to see late 80s-early 90s super big hairstyles, all taking place in the 50s.
I just can't explain it- you just have to endure it to understand. Was this review helpful? Yes

After reviewing the title of this movie, I'd thought that I was renting a porno. However, about 48 seconds into the movie, I realized that the only thing about "Pistol: The Birth of a Legend" that's even REMOTELY comparable to a porno is the patently horrible dialogue, acting, and soundtrack. Indeed, as it turns out, I'd rented the worst basketball movie ever made, bar none. It makes "Teen Wolf" look like an Academy Award (TM) winner in comparison, and if Pete Maravich had been alive when this movie was released, he would've ultimately died from shame, embarrassment, and humiliation. I wish only that I had one of those sweet Adam Sandler remote controls, so that I could rewind my life 110 minutes to make up for the time that I wasted on this one. Was this review helpful? Yes
