Reportedly, Vincente Minnelli turned down the opportunity to film Brigadoon on location in Scotland insisting that MGM's studio mockups looked more Scottish than the genuine article. This lavish adaptation of the Lerner and Loewe Broadway musical stars Gene Kelly as an American tourist who stumbles upon an enchanted Scottish village. Every 100 years, the people of Brigadoon awaken for a 24-hour period, then go back to sleep for another century while Brigadoon itself vanishes in the mists. Tommy Albright (Kelly) falls in love with village lass Fiona Campbell (Cyd Charisse) while his hard-drinking pal, Jeff Douglas (Van Johnson), dismisses the legend -- and indeed the existence of Brigadoon as a result of delirium. Fiona's betrothed Harry Beaton (Hugh Laing), upset by Kelly's intervention, threatens to leave Brigadoon -- an act that will spell doom for its residents. When this crisis has passed, Tommy is persuaded against his better judgment to escape Brigadoon himself and return to his own fiancée (Elaine Stewart) in New York. But the love between Tommy and Fiona results in a miraculous finale. Most of the Lerner-Loewe score remains intact, including the hit songs "Almost Like Being in Love," "Heather on the Hill," and "Come to Me Bend to Me." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Brilliant performances from all the leads, delightful musical numbers and a tear-jerker ending makes this a movie the whole family can enjoy. Most importantly, the film conveys the importance of holding out for true love and not comprising when it comes to choosing a spouse.

No words can explain the wonderful song and dance movies of Gene Kelly.

Scenery was very pretty, but the storyline was a little too far-fetched.

I really enjoyed this movie. This is one I had never watched. I don't usually enjoy a movie with so much singing but I did this one. It is also interesting to see movies actors I have seen before have played in the past.

On of the great musicals; can't be equaled by any contemporary movies.

I waited 3 years to watch this film and I wasn't disappointed. It almost seemed to move in slow motion compared to today's breakneck-paced films and television "dance" programs that seem to aspire to each contain more "energy", shock value, and absurdly obvious sexual inuendo than the last. I don't know if younger people will appreciate this film but we sure did here. Gene and Cyd weren't really dancing as much as they seemed to be floating effortlessly from one scene to the next. The end was joyful and sad at the same time, very poignant and very likeable. For me, it was over too soon. We miss you Cyd...

Yes, this flick is dated and somewhat corny, but the lads and lassies do some real good sing and dancing. This is a safe movie to watch when the parents visit. Very tame.

This musical was a little long and tedious...I love Gene Kelly's dance numbers but some were just really drawn out. It was kinda sweet but overall I guess I wasn't in the mood for such long scenes.

I LOVE Gene Kelly......but I was a little disappointed in this movie. Just a little too "hokie".
