Based on the novel by James Michener, this film stars William Holden as Harry Brubaker, a former military pilot who served in World War II. When he's called back into duty during the Korean conflict, Brubaker is angry, believing he's already served his country and needs to devote himself to his wife Nancy (Grace Kelly) and their children. However, he accepts his commission and is sent back into action as a pilot, with a special assignment to blow up five strategically crucial bridges in Korean territory. This drama, which focuses on the danger and futility of war, also features Frederic March as an admiral who respects the tremendous danger of Brubaker's assignment, and Mickey Rooney as an ill-fated helicopter pilot. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is a well done Korean War carrier film. The storyline is about a fighter pilot who is recalled to active duty and gives up his civilian life to fulfill his duty. The flying scenes are superb.

Always a good one to watch as it very accurately portrays the conflicts of duty, country, and family. Having personally been in Brubaker's shoes during Vietnam, I can attest to the excellent job Holden did in portraying the challenges of being a fighter pilot during wartime. Plus, the flying scenes were actually realistic!

This movie is about a blue angel pilot who flew Panthers VF191 in Korea called Sattans Kittens. His real name is Johnny Magda he was leader of the team. This movie is really about the second Blue Angel group called to war and the only Blue Angels ever ordered to go into combat.

My wife and I were very impressed with how well the flying scenes and special effects were from a move shot in 1954!!

Good movie with William Holden playing a pilot during the Korean war, and Mickey Rooney has a great supporting role- he is always fun to watch and is very good in this film. Although the plot is extremely predictable, it is worth watching for the flying scenes alone- not a great film but a good one.

Excellent war movie. William Holden plays Lt. Brubaker, a carrier-based fighter pilot fighting his fears to go an a deadly bridge-bombing mission in North Korea. Mickey Rooney is great in his role as a feisty fun-loving Rescue Helicopter pilot.

I love war movies but this one is a stinker. Despite the great cast and "classic" war movie look, this thing is like a big old 747 that just can't get off the ground. It starts out good enough, but it takes F O R E V E R ... to get to the big finale, and by that time I just didn't care anymore. The wife and I talked about it afterwards and our assessment was ".. but nothing HAPPENS"... It lacked action, it lacked character development, it lacked interest. This is one of the few war movies that I really did not like AT ALL. I think you can safely skip it and rent one with better reviews.
