Brian's Song (1970) Reviews

Brian's Song (1970)
Member Rating:
One of the best known and most enthusiastically reviewed made for television films of the 1970's, this drama was based on the true story of football greats Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo. Sayers (Billy Dee Williams) and Piccolo (James Caan) both joined the Chicago Bears the same year, and while it was obvious from the start Sayers had the talent and drive to be a great player, Piccolo seemed destined to be an also-ran on the team. However, Sayers and Piccolo struck up a friendship which brought out the best in both players, and coach George Halas (Jack Warden) chose them for a special assignment -- they became the first interracial roommates in the history of the NFL. When Sayers suffered a knee injury that threatened to end his career, Piccolo took it upon himself to help his friend through rehabilitation so he could rejoin the team. But when Piccolo began having heath problems, it was a problem too great for Sayers to handle -- his close friend had developed cancer. Adapted from Sayers' autobiography I Am Third, Brian's Song also features Chicago Bears legend Dick Butkus as himself. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This remains one of the best movies ever. I've seen it dozens of times and still cry every time I see it. The friendship between these 2 men is so moving. Also, seeing 2 great actors like James Caan and Billy Dee Williams at the beginning of their careers is fun.

This is a timeless classic. I watched this movie as a kid, and was moved them, and here, 30 years later, I still get emotional watching this movie. A great movie, reguardless of sports fans or not.

I had heard of that this movie was a made for TV legend, so I watched. While the true story is important and meaningful , the constant overplayed over-melodramatic music and overacting just takes away for the seriousness of the story. James Caan and Billy Dee Williams are very good actors especially given the time a TV movie would allow. Note, it's under 80 minutes long; so it running time is good.

Great "tug at the heartstrings" movie that ironically profiles rough, tough football players. James Caan plays the good-hearted, jovial Brian Piccollo and Billy Dee Williams the more serious, straight laced football player. I can't help but cry toward the end, however if you watch the interview of Gayle Sayers on the disc, it gives you a more realistic persective of their relationship. It's fun picking out the realBear players who star in the movie as well. One of the best!

The story is a great one and I remember the impact it had on me when I was very young when it first came out, I loved it. The story is still a good one but the film didn't have the impact on me as it did then. It comes off as a made for TV movie and seems to have aged. I think I'll stick with my childhood memories of the film instead.

We very much enjoyed the movie. The talk of all the kids being made fun of can be turned around if the person knows to give back in a fun way. I do not support bullying but it turned the other cheek in this movie. How wonderful that the it was written is very interesting and how jealousy turned into lover for one another. Great movie

I enjoyed seeing this movie when it first came out. I also recently enjoyed it. It is a moving picture. Have your tissue ready.

The story is a great one, but it's hobbled by the fact that it was produced for TV rather than for film. Still definitely worth seeing.
