Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) stars as Billy, A.K.A. Dr. Horrible, a budding super-villain whose plans for world domination continually go awry. His two goals: getting accepted into the Evil League of Evil, and working up the guts to speak to his laundromat crush Penny, played by Felicia Day (The Guild). The only thing standing in his way is Captain Hammer, Billy's superhero arch-nemesis played by Nathan Fillion (Firefly). With one big score, Billy could get into the E.L.E. and earn the respect of Penny, but only if he can keep her away from the dashing Captain Hammer...
I watched this online when it first came out. I have watched it a few times since and as soon as I saw it available on the site for rental, I immediately put it in queue. It is funny and cute. The irony of the whole musical is that you will like the bad guy and dislike the good guy. I liked them both, but I am biased to most of Whedon's stuff. The songs are hilarious, and I was surprised by NPH's great singing. Watch this, it's well worth it!!!
Amazing: 40 minutes of better-than-primetime material at a fraction of the cost. The songs are fresh and more muscially complex than any pop music from the past 20 years. Mr. Harris does indeed have good singing ability - enunciating clearly in rapid-fire, and his acting draws viewers into the story. Blu-Ray has fun extras, including a musical commentary spoofing commentaries in general. Just rent it already.
This was pretty good. I don't watch musicals but if I gotta watch one (like I did this one 'cause my wife wanted to see it) then this is the kind I would watch. It's funny! My only beef is that it was way too short.
I fear I must take exception. The "movie" barely 45 minutes long seemed to be an extended SNL skit. Wasn't anywhere near as funny as expected (premise seemed to have potential) and the singing was, lets say .... just under par (I'm also a fan of NPH)
This has to be one of the worst attempts at an original low budget musical I have seen. The only thing good I can say about it is that the player's hearts seem to be in the right place and it is tongue in cheek but more than that I cannot add. I will say, not worth your viewing time and mediocre songs, singing and acting at best. My grade: D-
