Based on the best-selling books by Suzanne Collins, THE HUNGER GAMES is the first film in the franchise. Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. 16- year-old Katniss Everdeen volunteers in her younger sister's place and must rely upon her sharp instincts when she'ÂÂs pitted against highly trained Tributes who have prepared their entire lives. If sheÂ's ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
I don't understand what all the hype is about. It was an slow to start, predictable, a bit gaudy/flamboyant, and a times boring. Unlike other books that have been made into movies (e.g. The girl with the dragon tattoo) this movie did not inspire me at all to read the books or watch the sequels.
As I did not read the book, I did not understand the point of the plot; it did not make sense to me. The movie could not develop the characters or explain them very well. I had no idea this was the first of a series, so I thought the ending was very strange and felt flat. I thought the acting could have been better, to make me care about the characters. And, I thought the movie paled in comparison to the Harry Potter and Twilight movies, but then the former had terrific seasoned character actors to support the children, and Twilight had the fabulous Billy Burke. However, "The Hunger Games" did pique my interest a tad in the book(s).
This is an amazing and unique movie. It had me engaged the entire time. The premise is unique, and makes you feel so sorry for the kids. The plot is packed with action. A great movie for adults to watch; but not for children.
Games is a post apocalyptic very reminiscent of Shirley Jackson's The Lottery. Also Brave New World and some of The Demolition Man mixed in.
The film is derivative, painfully so. The premise is poorly explained and demonstrated. It is like Survivor gone mental. Alliances are made, unlikely loves grow and in the end a heavily telegraphed ending. More bizarre still is 2 + 3 are in the planning stages! if you are a Science Fiction fan, this movie will fall flat for you right from the premise. It is supposed to be hundreds of years in the future, which is not borne up in the tech or even society...Far less adventurous films have done far better at portraying a future society, like the fifth element or Priest. Hunger Games did not leave me hungry for more.
Very strange movie, complete with strange costumes and a strange storyline. Lots of action and a high body count, hard to believe this isn't rated "R" instead of PG-13. I've never seen anything like it.

I read the series and if I hadn't this movie would be a lot more confusing. There is no real explanation and character information. The books were much better and easier to understand what was going on. I wish we could have enjoyed more of the grandness of the game preparation. The transitions didn't work well and were too quick, but the movie seemed long because they dragged out scenes that made no sense to those who didn't read the book.
Amazing movie. I read the book and the movie was very close to the story line. Of course there were parts that were left out due to time constraints but they did an amazing job. My husband did not read the book and didn't think he would like the movie but he loved it. Lots of action, a little gore but not heavy, ok for 12+ to watch.
