Dennis Christopher stars as a recent high school graduate in Bloomington, Indiana, who is caught with his friends -- Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earle Haley -- coasting between high school and deciding what to do with the rest of their lives. The four friends are snobbishly looked down upon by the college students of the town as "cutters," since they were born in Bloomington and their parents worked in the local limestone quarries that built the university. Dennis Christopher's character Dave wants to be a champion bicycle racer and he idolizes the Italian racing team -- so much so that he speaks, thinks, and acts Italian, all to his father's (Paul Dooley) forlorn exasperation. Dave falls for a college girl (Robyn Douglass), but is ashamed to admit he is a cutter and poses as an Italian exchange student to impress her. Dave is particularly excited when his heroes -- the Italian racers -- come to town for a race. But they are even more snobbish than the college students and rely on dirty tricks to keep Dave from winning a race against them. After that ordeal, Dave throws away his false identity and convinces his friends to enter the university's "Little 500" bicycle race against the college students. I had just finished reading a story about the Little 500 and wanted to rewatch the movie to watch the action during the race. I found that there was more to the movie than just cycling, and the Little 500. The trials of a group of locals that struggled to be a part of the college town they lived in, and the brotherhood of the group as they went on with their lives, culminating at the Little 500 race. Although the entire movie may not be totally factual, the Cutters did race and win the Little 500.

This movie was an instant classic! The acting especially by Dennis Christopher made this movie especially enjoyable. It is a movie that gives us life's lessons, laughs, tears, but most importantly, it gives us a very quality movie experience.

This is one of those movies which becomes an instant favorite after you see it for the first time. It never gets old! A nice "teenage" film that is realistic and quite humorous and not at all stupid or cliched, as many such movies made since often are. I could do without the race scene near the end (even though I am a fellow cyclist)....but even so, it does not really detract from this excellent movie. A memorable movie with something for everyone- tastefully done- and entertains all the way through; and the characters a likable. While cycling figures prominently in it's overall plot, it is not really "about" cycling- it is more of a coming-of-age thing and a comedy...but very tastefully done. Watch it, you'll like it! So much better than any of the more modern movies about teenagers!

This movie is one of my favorites. Perhaps partly nostalgia as this is a favorite in my family. Regardless, it is a classic. Family situations, close friend relationships, town people / college kids rivalry in small towns, these are all timeless paradigms.

An oldie, bit a goodie that still holds up after 31 years. Full of subtle humor, this is a story that will make you feel good. We all, at some point in our life have to grow up and find out the world wasn't exactly how we thought it was. The scene with the father (he has the BEST lines) saying "Refund!" is hilarious. This is the type of movie that puts a smile on your face.
