Welcome (2009)
Member Rating:
A young Kurdish refugee finds friendship from an unlikely source in Welcome, writer-director Philippe Lioret's dramatic chronicle of intersecting lives. The tale unfurls in Calais, a seaside community in the north of France where one can glimpse the white cliffs of Dover, England with the naked eye. Vincent Lindon stars as Simon, a local swimming instructor privately reeling in turmoil because he dreads an imminent divorce from his wife (Audrey Dana). Soon, his path unexpectedly criss-crosses with that of Bilal (Firat Ayverdi), a 17-year-old Kurdish refugee with two aspirations: swim the English Channel, and join his girlfriend in England following a lengthy separation. Despite their differing ages, the two men discover that they have a fair amount in common, and soon forge a tight bond marked by similar goals. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

This is a beautiful movie. It is a foreign film, and unlike some USA ones, it moves more slowly and does not have swearing, violence, lots of action. It is more of a simple movie of two individuals undergoing their own personal crises that meet. Covers illegal immigration, love, determination and a lot more.

This film had some nice moments for me ...better than most foreign films. amazing how people pass up good films like this for other bad ones!

A human drama worth watching for itself, but also as a warning: The "police state" in Calais as show in the film is not the France one usually hears about. Mishandling of immigration hurts everybody, and everyone's basic human rights.

I agree 100% with Amee S. Hollywood cannot make a movie such as this because there is very little audience and that's a shame. An all around very well done film. Vincent Lindon is outstanding as well as the rest of the cast. It's strange though, the characters at times speak in French ( with subtitles ) then at other times speak in English.
