Scarecrows (1988) Reviews

Scarecrows (1988)
Member Rating:
A suspenseful and chilling exercise in supernatural horror, this film opens with some speedy exposition during a mood-setting opening credits sequence, inter-cut with radio news reports of a violent paramilitary-style robbery on the Camp Pendleton payroll carried off by a thuggish team of commandos. Making their escape by hijacking a cargo plane -- along with its pilot and his teenage daughter -- the robbers are betrayed by one of their own number, Bert (B.J. Turner), who parachutes with the crate of stolen loot over a Florida cornfield. The team makes a landing in the same field, filled with eerie scarecrow effigies, and begins to sweep the area in search of their defector, working their way toward an abandoned farmhouse. Once there, the team members find themselves cut off from their means of escape by a band of living scarecrows, who stalk and kill the commandos one by one, gutting them and stuffing their bodies with straw; the victims then return to life as scarecrows themselves, joining their undead comrades and closing in on the rapidly dwindling group of survivors. Tightly paced and consistently tense, this low-budget film has slick production values (making it appear more expensive than it probably was) and only falters in some laughably overwrought performances. Taking a cue from Night of the Living Dead, director William Wesley eschews any definite explanation for the supernatural goings-on, instead relying on a nightmare logic that adds to the paranoid atmosphere. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

If you like zombie movies, you'll probably like this one.I loved it and thought it had a great storyline to it good acting and on top of that some scarecrow zombies. One thing that was pretty scary about this movie was when their fellow bankrobber comes into the cabin, one guy beats the tar out of him only to find out that all of his gut were removed and he is still standing expressionless.wooooo scary.

Not bad. Starts off kind of slow, but once the soldiers get to the abandoned house, it picks up. I liked the fact that the scarecrows are not really explained. Why they come to life and replace their body parts is a mystery. A current movie director should pick up the rights to this movie and either remake it or create a sequel.

Went into it with high hopes, considering the great reviews it had, BUT, was quickly disappointed. Way too much boring dialogue. The scarecrows were creepy though. Acting ok. Plot ok. Just never really went anywhere. My 9yo son even said it was "corny". My kids weren't even scared.

Great movie! Best Scarecrows ever in a film. Acting kind of cheesy but well done. Photography was very good and so was the story. 1988? Good copy to DVD also. I know 4 & 1/2 stars but it was really fun to watch compared to some of the other crap that is floating around , plus 20 years old!

Interesting for an 80s horror movie. I watched it on Comcast on demand for free. OK if you want something going on in the background while you surf the web or fold laundry or something. Very 80s feel and look. Not a big bugdet or blockbuster feature but may appeal to some.

This was a different version of horror slasher with scary looking scarecrows. Acting was below par but not aweful. Some pretty gory scenes.

One of my all time favs for movies like this. If you need pretty girls getting stabbed to enjoy a horror movie - this is NOT the movie for you. This was NOT a "zombie" movie nor was it full of blood and gore - It was suspensefull and interesting. Some of the filming techniques make it appear to be higher budget than it was, but I'm sure it was very low budget - it turned out good though. I just showed it to my 15 yr old who had never seen it. He gave it a thumbs up - but yes - it's really old and so some of it comes off a bit cheesy - but thats true of many old movies that are still worth watching. Some classic scenes as well - like the phone call and the sack in the fridge. And the getaway truck that stopped working - why did it stop working? oooh scary. And the one guy who was worried about how they are going to live in mexico when they don't speak 'mexican' - pay attention to what he says near the end of the movie about this. Worthy of a remake!
