L'ennemi Public No. 1 (2008) Reviews

L'ennemi Public No. 1 (2008)
Member Rating:
The true story of one of Europe's most infamous and charismatic criminals comes to a close in this drama based on the life and crimes of Jacques Mesrine. Picking up where L'Instinct de Mort left off, L'Ennemi Public No. 1 begins as Mesrine (Vincent Cassel) returns to France after an exile in Canada. Teaming up with gunman Michel Ardouin (Samuel Le Bihan), Mesrine masterminds a series of armed robberies, and while he's able to stay one step ahead of the law most of the time, eventually he finds himself back in prison, where he makes friends with the clever François (Mathieu Amalric). With François' help, Mesrine breaks out of prison and becomes something of a celebrity, penning an autobiography, hob-nobbing with the wealthy and trying to paint himself as a political radical with the help of leftist spokesman Charlie (Gérard Lanvin). Mesrine also renews his relationship with his girlfriend, Sylvia (Ludivine Sagnier), but he also turns his back on some of his old friends and underestimates the determination of the French police to stop him once and for all. L'Ennemi Public No. 1 (aka Public Enemy No. 1, Part 2) went into release in late 2008, while the wildly successful L'Instinct de Mort was still playing in French theaters. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

this would be 5 stars if the sequencing was better, it's very dismaying that the ending was given away at the beginning & that the movie was split into 2 dvd's but it is much better acted & directed & more believable than depp/dillinger et al

This movie shows what a great actor Vincent Cassel is. The same goes for Mathieu Amalric. The movie is overly long and in many places very slow. If it weren't based on a true story, I would not have made it to the end. Some of the dialog about why criminals do what they do is interesting, but in the end, they all seem to degenerate into self-destruction. I am glad to have watched it but will not watch it again.

Just as good as part one. Kind of like a French Scarface but based on a real person. The DVD, like part one, has a dubbed English version. Vincent Cassel is very good in this role.

A pretty shocking story but the movie is not as interesting as the Part 1. Much less character development, shows Mesrine as an extreme split personality with both lots of compassion and absolutely none.

The sequel was not that good. The ending was no surprise.

Vincent Cassel shows his incredible acting skills as French supercriminal Mesrine. Part 1 was good but Vincent raises the bar in Part 2. He ranges from celebrity darling to sorrowful son and father to grandiose schemer to charming lover all the while throwing sparks of psychotic violence. Richet's inventive direction also sparks, keeping the pace moving briskly while adding stunning period detail and capturing the political turmoil of the 70's. This was an Oscar nomination worthy performance in my opinion. It was certainly a great film and right there with Public Enemies as an epic bio of the narcissistic criminal personality.

Part 2 is even better than Part 1. Mesrine is charismatic, honorable and trustworthy in a criminal sense, and a clever criminal. Vincent Cassel is cast perfectly for this role. This was well worth the wait.
