Winter in Wartime (2008)
Member Rating:
As helmed by Martin Koolhoven (Het Zuiden), the Dutch-language saga Oorlogswinter stars Martijn Lakemeier as Michiel van Beusekom, a young man who becomes involved in the Dutch resistance during the final winter of World War II. Though this represents a heroic move on the boy's part, the experience ultimately leads to complete disillusionment, as it brings Michiel face to face with the realization that during times of war, good and evil are actually intertwined. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Absolutely excellent movie about a boy in Holland during WWII who will have to learn fast what it means to either 'cooperate', join sides or resist the German occupation, none of which are safe decisions. When an RAF plane crashes near his home, and the pilot survives, the boy must make a choice. It' s partly in English, so it's not all in foreign languages/subtitled. It's more authentic with the foreign languages where they need to be.

Subtitled. I enjoy many foreign movies and this was certainly one of the best WWII movies I have seen. The horrific part of war plus the heros of war combine in one fine storyline, a part of history I had not heard before...The young actor who plays Michiel is wonderful and carries the movie with his excellent ability. Excellent!

I normally don't watch foreign language flicks, but this one had a mix of English and German with relatively sparse dialogue. The story and performances were terrific and more than compensated for the occasional subtitles. This one is well worth seeing.

It is a very good movie. The boy joins the resistance and learns to become a man. I liked the film for more of the realistic of the movie and how it was during this time. The end of the movie really suprised me the most.

It is a feel good movie. Maybe close to real facts. The boy becomes a man when faced with difficult decisions and the sense of humanity. You can see it with your wife and she will probably like it, too.

Very disappointing. The drama has no tension, the story has gaping holes in the logic, and the acting is mediocre at best. The movie ultimately trivializes the horrible conditions in occupied Holland.
