A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969) Reviews

A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969)
Member Rating:
The lovable characters from the popular comic strip by Charles M. Schulz appear in this full-length feature. The perennial failure Charlie Brown attends the National Spelling Bee and manages the worst sandlot team in the history of baseball. Linus loses and retrieves his security blanket. Snoopy the beagle dances wildly and plays shortstop. The irascible Lucy Van Pelt tricks Charlie Brown into kicking the football, but at the last minute she pulls it back and sends him flying onto his back. Although he loses the spelling bee, his friends gladly welcome Charlie Brown back to town upon his return. Nearly two-dozen songs are included. The characters remain true to the original works of Schulz, and great care was taken in matching the appropriate voices to the character's personalities. This is the first of many successful animated features of the gang from Peanuts. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Of course, for anyone over the age of 40, this is a huge slice of nostalgia. Who could forget the buzz at school each day after a Peanuts special? The timeless philosophical viewpoints of the Peanuts gang are truly a summation of adulthood. I read a review here where the author said they forgot "how depressing" this movie is. I think it's easy to find that here if you aren't careful. However, if you look more closely, you'll see that Charlie Brown remains the eternal optimist. No matter how discouraging or hopeless things may seem, Charlie Brown never, ever gives up. That's a lesson in positivity we can all learn from.

There aren't a lot of kid's movies that can make me laugh, but this one did. It had some very funny moments and a lot of good heartfelt moments. However, the flaw in this movie was it moved slower than Christmas. It's obvious that the folks who made the movie were skilled at making those 30 minute specials, but weren't used to ginning up enough filler for a feature movie. The pace reminded me of the Jim Carey Grinch movie - a good half hour long movie that didn't work well as a feature film.

Well, as the dutiful parent i added this and another CB movie to my queue. Once it arrived i sat down with my 5 year old and we watched. Boy, i didn't remember that this was such a depressing movie. I remember CB and Snoopy from the 50's, 60's and 70's. I had the books. I read the comics. I watched the TV specials every year. i didn't realize that there was so much "my life just totally sucks" almost to the point of let's end it. Oh yeah, there was the token pat on the back at the end and some get on with life but man, i didn't show this to my other older children. Life is good, life is fun, life is happy!! even if you are having hard times it is what you make it. Sorry Charles, I know that this is supposed to be funny but with all the suicides and depression in the world, the school shootings and such, I don't think that the message you wanted to give was really coming through. Love you Chuck (both of you).

This is one Charlie Brown that I never get tired of seeing. Poor Charlie Brown makes it up to the National Spelling Bee, From 50,he is one of two left, and poor Charlie Brown misses with the work beagle by spelling it B-E-G-U-L-E.
