M*A*S*H: Goodbye, Farewell & Amen (1983)
Member Rating:
Goodbye, Farewell and Amen was the instant-classic final installment of the long-running TV series M*A*S*H. After nearly three bloody years of combat in Korea (and 11 years' worth of TV time!), a truce has been declared and the 4077th is going home. News of the cease-fire affects different people different ways. The happiest of the bunch should be Captain "Hawkeye" Pierce (Alan Alda), but he is undergoing a mysterious bout of depression over a horrible incident in his past. Meanwhile, the insufferable Major Winchester (David Ogden Stiers) shows signs of mellowing as he trains a group of musically-inclined Korean prisoners in the niceties of European chamber music. Others who must begin seriously considering a future unblemished by the threat of war are newly married Corporal Klinger (Jamie Farr), newly divorced Major Margaret Houlihan (Loretta Swit), and the hearing-impaired Father Mulcahy (William Christopher). The central mystery of the episode concerns the nature of Captain B. J. Hunnicutt's "special" goodbye to his roommate and best friend Hawkeye. Originally telecast February 28, 1983, the 2 1/2 hour Goodbye, Farewell and Amen was the most widely watched TV program of all time. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Nearly 25 1/2 years ago I missed this final episode. I went into labor just before it came on and left for the hospital to have my son, now a father himself! As this episode unfolded, it was as if I never missed a week watching the series. It was a joy to see everyone (Alda, Stiers, Swit, Morgan, Rogers, Berghoff, and, of course, Farr and Christopher) still YOUNG as I was then, and enjoy the fantastic writing of this series once again. I will be asking for this episode to watch at least one more time, perhaps as a gift from one of my children, maybe even the one who caused me to miss it in the first place! Hurrah! We sat down to watch the final episode of MASH, which I have never seen in the reruns and was disappointed because we were sent the special features disc and not the actual episode. It was very disappointing. As for the episode itself, it was a very nice ending to a great show. I am just sorry I did not get a chance to view it again.

This is a classy end to the TV series and it actually stands alone as a good TV movie. The last couple years of the TV series was becoming a little long in the tooth with predictable plots and dry scripts, but this movie brought everything to a close very nicely. It is well worth repeated viewings.
