I saw this special when it came on in 1972. I remember thinking "it can't get any better than this!" So when I popped in the DVD, I was a bit leary the show might be dated. Quite to the contrary! Liza is simply dazzling--bristling with talent and enthusiasm. The songs are brilliant. The only possible weakness is Bob Fosse's choreography. Though it shown with brilliance at times, I didn't feel it was the best of his best, and there were moments of datedness and weakness. But his direction of the special was unequivocably rich and brilliant. Exciting, fast-moving, chic and not at all cheap or tawdry. Genius!

Can you imagine Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson trying to come up with a full hour of "showstoppers" like this? Fun from start to finish. She is the last of the Hollywood royalty, it's all downhill from here folks!

I loved every minute from beginning to end. I saw Liza live at the Music Hall in Detroit the summer of 2006. I was tickled to watch her so alive and vibrant on stage with all new material, too; wish I had that performance on a DVD. So great to watch Liza with a Z over and over again. FIVE BIG STARS....I LOVED IT.

...to appreciate Liza Minnelli. Really. As good as you've probably heard, this over-30-year-old but newly-restored TV show bristles with the combined talent, energy and creativity of Bob Fosse, composers Kander and Ebb and of course LIZA WITH A Z herself. Although the star has her ongoing troubles with drugs & self-image, she comes across terrifically well here, and not just in the original show (when she was young & fit) but also in the DVD extras such as her recent appearances at the Toronto Film Festival & the GLAAD awards (at the latter, singing a splendid Charles Aznavour song). If the Fosse choreography sometimes grows a bit much (the "Son of a Preacher Man" number) it's more often electric, riveting & tons of fun ("Ring Them Bells"). And Liza is... a star. Older folk already know what to expect, but it'd be nice if youngsters took a look and discovered what open-hearted/open-throated singing sounds like when it isn't non-stop wailing, occasionally on tune, a la "American Idol."

This was Liza at the very tiptiptip-top of her form...beltin', high-kickin', shining like a megastar for a loving live audience. And this was Fosse, who won an Emmy for directing this, the same year he won an Oscar for "Cabaret" and a Tony for "Pippin." If you're a fan of either or both, you'll want to own this.

Now i understand why so many drag queens try to immitate the one & only Liza ! It's hard to find enthusiasm like that anymore :) What a great time it must have been to see this Broadway hit in New York !
